Memorial services will begin at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the Springfield United Congregational Church of Christ, 1002 College St., Springfield, SD. Emmett B. “Ike” Oleson was born on March 6, 1924 at Lake Andes, South Dakota in Charles Mix County to Chris and Carrie Odena Oleson. He was raised and received his education at Lake Andes, graduating from Lake Andes High School in 1941. Ike then moved to find work in Iowa, until the outbreak of WWII. He then joined the war effort with the US Army. It was this experience that left Ike with a great philosophy and appreciation for vocational education. Following three years and nine months serving with Company A of the 20th Tank Battalion; Ike received his honorable discharge. Through the GI Bill, Ike attended the South Dakota State Teachers College and received his Bachelors of Science degree in Education. He then furthered his education at Colorado State University receiving a Master’s degree with a Major in Administration and Supervision of Vocational Education. On June 18, 1948 Ike was united in marriage with Frankie Ann Monfore in Springfield, SD. The couple made their first home in Springfield. They were blessed with a daughter, Nancy and son, Kurtis. Ike taught and coached in Ravinia where he coached the Bears in a state basketball championship game. This great team of men has continued to gather for reunions to this day. He served in the Kimball and Chamberlain school districts and at Southern State College. After teaching and coaching for 16 years, South Dakota Governor Boe appointed Ike the first State Director of Vocational Services. In 1963 Congress passed legislation to provide funding for Vocational Education. This led Ike to the establishing of six post-secondary vocational schools. He went on to serve the Camplell County School District in Gillette, WY and the Wyoming State Department of Education. His final assignment in education was to serve as the Special Consultant to the Department of Education for American Samoa. Ike consistently served the communities in which he lived. He has been an active member of Masons, Eastern Star and Shrine. He served in many different offices and took special pride in serving as the Potentate for Yelduz Shrine of Aberdeen in 2000. He was an active member of the United Church of Christ in each communities in which he lived. When he wasn't busy serving others, Ike enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, wood-working and gardening. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, coach, community leader and friend. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Frankie M. Oleson, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter, Nancy Frentz and her husband, Gary of Custer, SD; son, Kurtis Oleson and his wife, Jan, Sioux Falls, SD; four granddaughters: twins, Kelly (Eric) McMillan, Wall, SD and Kate Frentz, Hill City, SD, Jessie Oleson and Mikayla Oleson, both of Sioux Falls, SD; and one future great-granddaughter. He is preceded in death by his parents, Chris and Carrie Odena Oleson; one sister Metta Oleson Cooper and seven brothers, Charlie, Orville, Kermit, Kenneth, Kermit, Lawrence, and George.
