Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Smith, of this city, was killed by a train at an early hour Sunday morning, just South of Fredericksburg, the body being horribly mangled. It appears that young Smith, Jno. W. Hunter, Preston Z. Payne, and W.M. Berry, left here on the passenger train which went North at 8:30 Saturday night going to Alexandria. They spent several hours in that city. About midnight they went to Potomac Yards, and boarded a freight train of the R., F., & P. R.R., which soon started towards Fredericksburg. The train did not stop here, but ran through at a speed of about twelve miles an hour. When a short distance south of the city, Hunter, Payne and Berry jumped off. Berry said he told Smith not to jump as the train was going faster and he thought Smith remained on train. Sunday morning Smith's body was found just south of Hazel Run, horribly mangled, both arms and both legs being cut off, the head cut in many places. The city coroner, Dr. J.N. Barney, was summoned and an inquest held with the following jury: Messrs. A.G. Billingsley, A.S. Haislip, R.L. Jefferson, R.D. Merchant, R.L. Williams, J.A. White. After examining a number of witnesses, the jury returned a verdict stating that Smith came to his death by attempting to alight from a moving train and exonerated the railroad from any blame or liability. Smith was 37 years old. He is survived by his parents and several brothers and sisters. The remains were turned over to the family and taken in charge by Undertaker Sacrey, who prepared them for burial. The funeral took place Monday afternoon from Sacrey's undertaking establishment. Services at the grave were conducted by Rev. R.C. Gilmore.The Daily Star - Oct. 30, 1916.
