Emmett was married to Evelyn Hirsch in 1946 and born into this marriage was Lawrence Emmett Horst in 1947. In 1960, Emmett was married to Shirley Hilzer Hermann, and born into this marriage was Kimberly Kaye Horst Duran in 1963. Following a 10-year relationship, he married RoseMaria Babish in 1985. Emmett passed away peacefully at Lutheran Hospice at the age of 90. Survivors are his wife, RoseMaria Horst of Thornton; son, Larry Horst (Kristi) of Windsor; daughter, Kim Duran (Rick) of Brighton; stepdaughters, Laura Laberta of Aurora; Teresa Babish of Golden; stepson, Joe Babish (Karen) of Denver; and grandchildren, Joley, Lesley, Lynn, Lauren, Landon, Libby, Michael, Kayla, Kianna, Brittany, Duane, Vicki, Luke, Mark, Sean, Matthew, Danny and Daneen; as well as 16 great-grandchildren. Emmett was preceded in death by his stepson, Tony; grandson, Richie; parents, Christian and Elizabeth; bothers, Bill, Ed, Ted, John and Art; and sister Elsie. Emmett received his first accordion from his parents for his 12th birthday, Oct. 2, 1937. No one, including his parents could have ever imagined how this gift would change his life, and shape him into the man he became. The accordion was his first love, and his dedication to playing the accordion was apparent. He never learned to read music, yet it didn’t matter. His talents in this area are amazing. By listening to records and other musicians, he skillfully played the songs beautifully. In the summer of 1941, at the age of 16, Emmett formed his first band with four other local musicians. Emmett played Dutch Hop style music for weddings, private parties and clubs in the northern Colorado area. In 1957, he recorded his first record, with the second record following two years later. In 1967, Emmett recorded his ever-popular album “Mr. Polkaman,” which ironically became synonymous with the name Emmett Horst. On the album “Mr. Polkaman,” Emmett composed and arranged the songs “Mr. Polkaman Polka,” as well as “The Four Star Polka,” “Getting Pickled Polka,” “The Whopper Polka,” the “Kimmy Kaye Waltz,” “Happiness is,” and several others. The ‘70s were busy and rewarding for Emmett. Starting in 1970, he and his group recorded the album “The Familiar Sounds of Emmett Horst.” One of Emmett’s proudest moments was being chosen to back up Myron Floren during a solo trip Myron made to Denver in 1972. Shortly after this honor, Emmett had the pleasure of playing for many of Lawrence Welk’s band members and performers at the Shangri-La that was once located at the corner of 72nd and Federal. In 1971, Emmett renamed his band Emmett Horst and his All Stars, and in addition to the traditional Polkas and Waltzes, added Country and Western to their musical sounds. The band consisted of Max Backer on saxophone, clarinet and lead vocals, Paul Asmus playing bass and singing harmony, and George Promise on drums. In 1976, Emmett and his All Stars recorded “It’s Polka Party Time for You and I and U.S.” This album was released on Emmett’s 35th anniversary of playing the accordion. Emmett retired his band in 2002, however the keys on his accordion never seemed to cool. He continued to play his accordion at senior care centers, Oktoberfest events, family events, special occasions, and for friends who simply loved to hear him play.
