SMELSER (SMELTZER) Last rites took place Saturday morning at eleven o'clock from the Rileyville Union Church for Emery Eugene Smelser, 40, who died at the University Hospital, Wednesday night, May 24. Burial was in Beahm's Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Josiah Andrew officiated, assisted by Rev. Galen Crist. Mr. Smelser had been a patient in the Hospital for six weeks suffering with severe burns about his body, face and arms which he sustained when his clothing was ignited from an electric heater in the shop at his home. His condition had been serious for several weeks, although it was believed that he was improving. He was born on May 23, 1910, near Rileyville a son of Amos C. Smelser and the later Mrs. Dora E. Wood Smelser. For several years he had been employed in Hagerstown, but for sometime lately he had been employed as an electrician at the American Viscose Corp. in Front Royal. He also did repair work on electrical appliances on a small ship in his home. He was a member of the Methodist Church and Lafayette Lodge No. 137 AF & AM at Luray. Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Nora Sours, of Luray, and four children: Jean, JoAnne, Max and Donnie, all at home. He also leaves two brothers: Ray Smelser, of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Frank Smelser, of Crewe, Va.
