For two years he was a land surveyor and taught singing schools. Returning to Alstead he married Nov 17, 1808, Hannah Davis and then settled in Brookfield as a farmer. It seems probable that the farm of one hundred acres, which his father Samuel bought,March 30, 1809, of Elisha Allis was purchased for him. The original deed which has been preserved by the descendents of Samuel Slade describes it as being "the third hundred of my Original Righ tin Brookfield aforesd, that is No fourteen in the Eleventh Range." His wife Hannah dying without children, he returned again to Alstead and married, Feb 21, 1816, Penelope Wellington. Four children were born to them on the farm in Brookfield. About 1836 or 1837, the family removed to Thetford, VT where he purchased an old-fashioned brick house standing with the gable end to the road and commanding a fine view of the New Hampshire hills. He became a prominent citizen of Thetford, was a surveyor and for many years justice of the peace, and in the latter part of his life was generally known by the title of "Squire Slade." He was a supporter and trustee of Thetford Academy, in which his children and grandchildren were educated. He was a member of the Congregational church and an earnest supporter of the principles of the Republican party. He was an influential and public-spirited citizen. In the War of 1812 he enlisted in a Vermont regiment and was a corporal of his company. On the way to the scene of action they were met by the news of the battle of Plattsburg and returned home without seeing active service. His wife Penelope died soon after the removal to Thetford and he married as his third wife, July 25, 1840, Mary Town by whom he had no children. She died in Alstead July 26, 1886 aged 92. Like other members of the Samuel Slade family, he was a very large many and weighed at one time over three hundred pounds. He died in Thetford, July 28, 1866 in his 80th year.
