Description	:	Ensign Joshua Durant Rev War Soldier Joshua Durant was born about 1754 son of John and Phebe (Butler) Durant. Chelmsford was his father's hometown and supposed birthplace of Joshua. Chelmsford was his father's hometown and supposed birthplace of Joshua. When Joshua was nine years old he went from place to place, he once lived with a woman who would work all night to support her family of children. He married first with Unity Clark, daughter of Deacon Simeon Clark and Betsey Hall "the ceremony took place on the dark day; had boiled dinner afterwards." His wife died after living with her two years. She was buried at Ash Swamp Cemetery in Keene, New Hampshire located next to a golf course it is accessed by a set of stairs leading to the cemetery, there are but a few old and worn stones located there. The cemetery is maintained by the Daughters of the American Revolution, Ashuelot Chapter of Keene New Hampshire. Unity and her father Deacon Simeon Clark are buried there along with Joshua and Unity's infant which may have died during childbirth or some epidemic such as small pox, it appears Unity died nine days after the infant. Unity's stone reads as follows; Unity Durant, consort of Mr. Joshua Durant, died 29 Nov. 1781, aged 20 died 9 Dec. 1793, aged 70. Deacon Simeon Clarks stone is very legible but the stone appears to be a shale stone with a piece already broken off. The stone reads Dea Simeon Clark died 9. Dec 1793 aged 70. After one year Joshua married "the widow Hodgman" who had two children, Stephen and Hannah, widow of Stephen Hodgman. He had Seven children with Hannah Wright (Hodgman) only five reaching adult. Hannah died Oct 10, 1798 and is buried at the West Cemetery, Keene New Hampshire Joshua married a third time to Mary Dawson who was born about 1745 and died June 22 1829 in Weathersfield, Vermont no children recorded. April 21, 1775 Joshua was in Swanzey moving there around 1762 – 1777 answering the Lexington alarm. The minutemen met at Captain Hammond's house and left at sunrise the 21st. Joshua marched to Cambridge under Captain Hammond then enlisted for eight months in the Chelmsford, Massachusetts Regiment. Joshua was a Private in Colonel Moses' Company, commanded by Lieutenant Benjamin Walker, the company's objective was to shoot from the cover of buildings and fences to annoy the enemies left flank "did great execution" then attacking the right flank near the Mystic River. Joshua stayed in Cambridge hemming in the British forces until December or January he re-enlisted through the winter of 1775 -1776 "A pressing call was also made in June for immediate reinforcements for the army, to serve three months. Two regiments were raised and sent forward via Worcester and Springfield. One of these was commanded by the veteran Col. Moses Nichols, of Amherst, in which was a company from Winchester, under Capt. Nehemiah Houghton. In that company, Joshua Durant was ensign, and Elijah Blake, Walter Wheeler and Joseph Brown were privates, all of Keene. The regiment was designed especially for the protection of West Point and joined Arnold's army at that post. Col. Nichols, with his regiment, encamped near Arnold's headquarters at the Robinson House, on the 10th of August, and was there at the time of his treason. Those troops were discharged on the 21st of October. "An incident of Joshua Durant's army experience is thus related by Joshua with several others from Keene, N.H "was in the battle of Bennington and Vermont. In the heat of the battle the Hessian troops were driven from the breast –works. Mr. Durant pursued a party of them into a field; and gaining fast upon them, the one in the rear turned back upon him. Wrenching the Bayonet from his gun, Durant seized one of the Hessians by the collar, and was about to stab the other with his bayonet, when both Hessians begged for quarter and surrendered as his prisoners. The three Hessians were brothers. Durant occasionally wore, as trophies of this occasion, a vest and a silver-mounted breastpin, taken from the man he had killed." After leaving the army, Mr. Durant bought a farm at Swanzey, N.H., agreeing to pay for it in "Continental money", which soon depreciated as much that his farm was very cheap. After selling this farm, he bought the valuable farm in Weathersfield, Vermont, which, in 1886, was in the possession of Luther G. Boynton, who married first with Olive Mary Durant, a Grand-daughter of Joshua Durant." Joshua is buried next to his third wife Mary Dawson in Weathers field Vermont in the Aldrich cemetery. This small cemetery was probably located next to his property and later became what is today the Crown Point Country Club. Joshua placed the following in the paper – (Weathersfield) Strayed from the subscriber on or about the first of October last, 4- Yearlings, 3 Heifers, and 1 Steer. One heifer of a brown color, short tail; the other two deep red; the steer a pale red with a brockle face.
