Despite the lack of a public record regarding the date of Samuel's birth, the claim by others that he was born Apr. 27, 1688 is impossible based on his extant gravestone.] Per "The Churchill Family In America" (1886, p. 329-30), with limited annotations or minor words replaced for moderization of the published text, but with expansion of the summary of the children: • Ensign Samuel Churchill (Joseph,2 Josiah,1). Born at Wethersfield, 1688. He settled at Newington parish, where he bought land of Joseph Allen in 1712, fifty-two acres, adjoining land of Capt. Robert Wells and Jonathan Deming. He lived in a house on the hillside just south of the present house at which Miss Mary Churchill lives (1903). Like his father and grandfather he was active in public affairs of town and church. His name appears very frequently in the records of the Newington society, where he served on the Prudential and School Committees, and in other minor affairs, like repairs on the meeting-house, school-house, etc. One vote of the society, taken June 26, 1721, in anticipation of the settlement of the Rev. Elisha Williams, is of interest, viz.: Voted and agreed as followeth: Samuel Hunn, Jabezeth Whittlesey, Richard Borman, and Samuel Churchel, shall undertake to make twenty thousand bricks for Mr. Elisha Williams, to take the care and provide the hands and all things for said work. • In one of the Wethersfield deeds he is called "Smith," indicating his trade. In 1746 the General Assembly appointed him ensign of the local military company, and he bore the title afterwards, and has been designated in the family ever since as "Ensign Samuel." He died at Newington Parish, July 21, 1769, and lies buried in the churchyard. • [He] married, June 26, 1717, Martha Boardman, born Dec. 19, 1695, daughter of Daniel and Hannah (Wright) Boardman, of Wethersfield, and granddaughter of Samuel Boardman, of Cleydon [sic, Claydon, Oxfordshire,] England, one of the first settlers, and for many years one of the most prominent citizens of Wethersfield. Mrs. Martha (Boardman) Churchill died Dec. 14, 1780, at Newington. The children of Ensign Samuel and Martha (Boardman) Churchill, born at Newington Parish, are: • i. Giles Churchill, b. June 11, 1718; purportedly m. and settled by 1751 at the "Forks of the Delaware River," a large land grant along the west side of the Delaware River centered at present-day Northampton County and the City of Easton, Penn. More recent documents place him in 1759 engaged as a miller at Beekman Precinct of the Beekman Patent at southern Duchess County, NY across the border from Litchfield County, Conn. The Churchill Gen. regarding Giles is fraught with contradictions. • ii. Samuel Churchill, b. April 27, 1721; m. by 1747 Thankful Hewett, widow of Joseph Seager, Jr. (q.v. Seger) of Sheffield, Mass., she b. in 1722 at Plainfield, Conn. Both died at Hubbardton, VT in the early 1800s (dual g.s.) Ten children of the family. • iii. Capt. Charles Churchill, Esq., b. Dec. 31, 1723; m. Nov. 19, 1747 at Newington Parish, Lydia Belden, dau. of Josiah Belden and Mabel Wright, b. Sept. 6, 1725 at Wethersfield. He d. Oct. 29, 1802 (g.s.) and Lydia d. Mar. 19, 1805 (g.s.) at Newington Parish, Wethersfield, Conn. Nine children of the family. • iv. Dea. Jesse Churchill, b. Aug. 31, 1726; m. 1) Nov. 8, 1750 at Farmington, Conn., Jerusha Gaylord, by whom he had seven children at Farmington; m. 2) Nov. 29, 1769 at Newington Parish, his 2nd cousin Sarah (Boardman) Cady, by whom he had three children; m. 3) June 15, 1778 at Newington Parish, his 2nd cousin Elizabeth (Robbins) Belden, by whom he had no children. He d. May 7, 1806 (g.s.) and 3rd wife Elizabeth d. July 3, 1794 (g.s.) • v. Benjamin Churchill, b. April 10, 1729; m. 1) Apr. 19, 1753 at Farmington, Conn., Abigail Barn(e)s, by whom he had seven child at Farmington. She d. Oct. 2, 1803 (g.s.); m. 2) Nov. 29, 1808 at Bristol, Conn., Huldah (Beecher) Haddsdell by whom he had no children. He d. June 3, 1819 (g.s.) • vi. William Churchill, b. Nov. 6, 1732; m. 1) Sept. 15, 1760 at Farmington, Conn., Ruth Tryon, dau. of Thomas Tryon and Mary Andrus, b. 1720 at Middletown, Conn. by whom he had 8 children; m. 2) Abiah Wildman by whom he had three additional children at Farmington. He d. on an unknown date purportedly at New Jersey.
