Description	:	DEATHS - In this town [Amherst NH], 18th inst., Mr. Ephraim Goss, aged 74. Mr. Goss served his country as a soldier in the army of the revolution and received therefor a pension from the government. He was among the few remaining in this village, who were its early inhabitants. He here reared up a numerous and highly respectable family of children, now scattered abroad in useful stations in the land. Read More	DEATHS - In this town [Amherst NH], 18th inst., Mr. Ephraim Goss, aged 74. Mr. Goss served his country as a soldier in the army of the revolution and received therefor a pension from the government. He was among the few remaining in this village, who were its early inhabitants. He here reared up a numerous and highly respectable family of children, now scattered abroad in useful stations in the land. These, with his aged companion, mourn with sincere regret the departure of a father and friend, who was greatly endeared to them, acquiescing in the will of their Heavenly Father, cherishing the hope, that what may be their loss here, will be abundantly his gain in a better world hereafter. Mr. Goss enjoyed the respect and esteem of his neighbors as an industrious and peaceable citizen and as a remnant of the revolutionary soldiers, he was entitled to be, and was held in much regard. At most of the recent 4th of July celebrations and political conventions, he was an invited and honored guest. And especially was he entitled to public regard, in that he set an example of self denial, rare indeed among his compeers of the revolutionary army. Like the most of them, from their pursuits and the custom of those days, he early acquired a habit of using ardent spirits; but which for a number of years past, he had entirely renounced, and when the temperance reformation commenced, he became convinced of its positive (...) and utter uselessness - He at once abjured its use, and ever afterward lived in total abstinence from it. Thus evincing the truth, by his example and success, that there is no real necessity for its use, under any circumstances; and he (...) difficulty in breaking from it at once, at any time of life or siege of habit. And that "Greater is he that conquereth himself than he that taketh a city."
