C, 18th Massachusetts Infantry Ephraim Cushman Ripley, Jr.: born Aug. 30, 1837 at Plympton, MA, the son of Ephraim C. and Eliza (Soule) Ripley and the brother of Josiah W. Ripley of Co. C, 18th Mass. Infantry. He was a 25 year-old teacher from Plympton, MA, when he enlisted on August 30, 1862 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on Sept. 2, 1862 as a Private with Co. C. He enlisted on the same day his brother Josiah was seriously wounded at the Second Battle of Bull Run and would have not known this fact when he enlisted. Per records Ripley was 5 ft. 9 in. tall, with a dark complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal on Oct. 2, 1862, but was then returned to the ranks on Oct. 12th. He died of Pulmonary Consumption at Falmouth, VA on Dec. 8, 1862. His family paid $125.00 to have his body brought back to Plympton, MA where he was buried in January 1863 at the Congregational Church Cemetery.
