About five o’clock last Thursday evening, Erastus Eells dropped dead at his residence on North Jefferson street. At the time of his death he had just returned home from the Speaker residence where he had been making preparations for the funeral of Mrs. Louise M. Speaker who died the day previous. Heart failure was the immediate cause of his death. His age was 83 years, 8 months and 5 days. Erastus Eells was born in New Canaan, Fairfield County, Connecticut, August 9, 1808. His parents came to Columbiana county in 1817, locating near New Lisbon where his father died in August 1823. Erastus remained on the home farm in Elkrun township until 1824, when he came to New Lisbon and entered upon an apprenticeship to learn cabinet making with Joseph Ledlie with whom he remained three years. After working as a journeyman one year he opened a shop of his own in 1828 and was in the business up to the day of his death, a period of sixty-four years, being perhaps the oldest undertaker in the state, during which time he buried over 5,000 persons and traveled with the hearse fully 60,000 miles. Mr. Eells was one of the original abolitionists of Eastern Ohio, and was one of the most active and trusted agents of the “underground railroad” before the war. He was married four times, and was the father of eleven children, only five of whom are living. Mr. Eells was elected county treasurer in 1859, and he discharged the duties of the office for a term of two years. He was probably the best known citizen in Columbiana county, and none ever lived in New Lisbon who was more respected. He meddled with no man’s business, but was always willing to extend a helping hand to the poor and distressed. The United Presbyterian church never had a more earnest and sincere member and his whole life was in consonance with his faith. Though an honest and intelligent man he was unfortunate in business ventures. A short time ago he was compelled to make an assignment, which doubtless caused him much unhappiness and hastened his death. The funeral of Mr. Eells was held from his late residence Monday afternoon at one o’clock. It was largely attended by leading professional men—lawyers, physicians, journalists and by gentlemen prominent in the business circles of the town. A profusion of flowers bore testimony to the esteem of friends who knew and esteemed him in life, among which were a basket of fragrant offerings from Hamilton, Lemmon, Arnold & Co., of Allegheny, Pa., a handsome bouquet of lilies from the New Lisbon Episcopal Church and a beautiful wreath from F. M. Atterholt and wife, of Akron. The air was redolent with the perfume of the flowers offering up so many paeans of praise of him who lay dead. Rev. J. M. Moore, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, officiated, assisted by Revs. Oliphant, Chandler and Gruber. Rev. Moore spoke feelingly and eloquently, paying a handsome tribute to the memory of the deceased. As the venerable form lay in the stillness of death it seemed as the quiet slumber of the wearied one resting from labor; and it was hard to realize that a never ending sleep had sealed his eyes to earthly vision. The pall bearers were: Robert Hole, Salem; J. Reeves, Leetonia; Henry Crowl, Leetonia; Ado and Charles Sipe, New Lisbon; Mr. Craig, Freedom, Pa.; Wilson McLaughlin and James K Frew, New Lisbon. Erastus Eells is gone! His cold form has been borne to its lasting resting place anointed with the tears of our people who will ever cherish his memory with undying affection.
