Erastus E. Scofield died yesterday afternoon, at the home of his son, Hon. Edwin L. Scofield, in South Street. The causes of his death were the various physical infirmities due to old age. His condition had been such for two or three weeks that his relatives and friends were aware that the end must be very near. During much of the time since his last attack of illness, he was unconscious and seemed to be free from pain. Erastus E. Scofield was a direct descendant of one of the early settlers here in Stamford and in his life said character illustrated the best traits which distinguished the pioneers of the town. His great-great grandfather was a soldier in the American army during the revolutionary war, and in each generation the family has been distinguished as well for its patriotism as for the sturdy, sterling qualities which enter into the composition of men recognized as leaders in the community. Mr. Scofield was born Nov. 11, 1816, a son of Edwin Scofield, and his boyhood days were spent upon his father's farm. Here he acquired habits of industry and thrift which never deserted him through life. He attended the district school, and received a more advanced education than most farmers' sons of those days, for before he had reached manhood he was a teacher in the boarding school in North Stamford. He soon turned his attention to business, and for ten years conducted a mill in North Stamford. In 1856 he opened a flour and feed store in the village and in that business, he continued until Aug. 9, 1902, when he sold it to Miller A. Scofield. He established the Star Mills in Pacific Street and a grain depot, in Canal Street, and gave his personal attention to their management up to the time he retired from active business. His reputation as a business man always stood high. He was absolutely honest in all his dealings. When he retired, he left a clean commercial record of more than half a century. His treatment of his employees was always kind and considerate, but that was the treatment he accorded to all with whom he had dealings. His disposition was modest and retiring, but those who knew him best knew a gentleman. In Politics, Mr. Scofield was a Whig until the Republican Party was formed. Then he became a Republican and so remained. His son, Hon. Edwin L. Scofield, in a speech at a Republican caucus in 1902, mentioned the fact that his father, since he became old enough to vote had never failed to deposit his ballot at any national, State, town , city or borough election. It was his idea of the duty of a citizen, and might well serve as an example to others. Although he never sought for political honors, it was natural that he should be called upon to serve his fellow citizens in positions of trust. For two years he was selectman, and also served in other local offices. He was chairman of the committee which had charge of the erection of the Town Hall, completed in 1871 (of which A. J. Bell is the only surviving member), and it is interesting to note that his son is chairman of the committee which has charge of the erection of the structure which is to replace it. He was married to Jane A. Waterbury, a native of Bedford, who died on Christmas Day, 1867[sic] - a woman who is gratefully remembered by the older citizens of Stamford for her many estimable qualities. They had two children. One is Edwin L. Scofield, a well-known lawyer of this city, who served in both houses of the General Assembly, and was the leader in each; who was the second Mayor of Stamford and has been Commissioner of Building and Loan associations and Insurance Commissioner of the State- the latter an office from which he recently resigned. His other son, Frederick died in infancy. In the declining years of his well-spent life, Mr. Scofield made his home with his son, and was surrounded by comfort and affection. His brother, Granville E. Scofield, is city engineer of Bridgeport. Although he had been gifted with exceptionally good health and strength, he had been fast failing for the last year, and the announcement of his death was not unexpected, though it is none the less deeply regretted by a wide circle of friends."
