Description	:	Erastus M. Hickman was born January 6, 1840, in Randolph county, Indiana; departed this life April 23, 1918, at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 17 days. He moved with his parents to Newton, Iowa at the age of 12 years. He enlisted August 2, 1862, from Jasper county, Iowa, to serve three years during the war, and was mustered into the United States service at Iowa City, Iowa, August 28, 1862, as a private of Captain T. Hickman was born January 6, 1840, in Randolph county, Indiana; departed this life April 23, 1918, at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 17 days. He moved with his parents to Newton, Iowa at the age of 12 years. He enlisted August 2, 1862, from Jasper county, Iowa, to serve three years during the war, and was mustered into the United States service at Iowa City, Iowa, August 28, 1862, as a private of Captain T. Ault's Company C, 22nd Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Colonel William Stone commanding. He served in the army, participating in the siege and surrender of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and was in all the engagements of his regiment until he was sent to the hospital for a short time and then sent home on sick furlough and at Iowa City was transferred to the 2d battalion , 172d company of the Veteran Reserve corps with which he served until the end of his term, and was always at his post of duty, achieving a gallant record for meritorious service and soldierly conduct at all times. He received a certificate of final honorable discharge at Davenport, Iowa, June 1865, by reason of the close of the war. On January 1, 1866, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Thomas. To this union were born eight children, one of whom died in infancy. The three sons, W. E. and E. P. of Windsor, Colorado, and E. E. of Denver, Colorado, also the daughters, Mrs. A. E. Blakesley of Denver Coloardo, Mrs. William Clow of Bridgeport, Nebraska and Mrs. Shelby Ramsay of Seward, Nebraska, were present at the funeral. The other daughter, Mrs. Guy Ramsay, was unable to be present, being detained at her home in Windsor, Colorado, by the serious illness of her little daughter. An only sister, Mrs. Jane Hickman of Newton, Iowa, was also present. Mr. Hickman leaves besides the ones mentioned, his wife, 25 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. Mr. Hickman was a homesteader, having moved to Seward county in 1869. Provided by contributor, Kathy Monical Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, April 25, at the home by Bert L.
