A gathering of friends and a family visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 1517 Northwestern Ave., in Ames, with the family present from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. A celebration of life service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 20, at Bethesda Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery following a lunch served at the church. Erben was born in Auburn, July 13, 1922, son of Oscar and Christena (Luckow) Hunziker. He attended school there and then attended Iowa State University from 1939 to 1943, graduating with a degree in architectural engineering in 1943. Erb met Margaret Swatosh at Iowa State University, and they married in 1941. They operated a restaurant from 1941 to 1952. In 1952, they started a construction and development company with Don Furman. This company was known as H & F Builders. In 1954, a real estate department was added and named Hunziker and Furman Real Estate Inc. In 1962, they added an apartment management company. H & F Builders have subsequently been divided into Hunziker & Associates and Furman Properties. Hunziker & Associates is now made up of a Real Estate Development Department, a Management Company and a Development and Building Company. Erb's past accomplishments include: past president-Ames Realtor Association, past president-Ames Home Builders Association, past president-Iowa State Home Builders Association, past president-Ames Foundation, past president-Ames Economic Development Commission, past president-Founder of Ames Seed Capital Fund, past president-Ames Golf and Country Club, past board member-Bethesda Lutheran Church of Ames, past member-Advisory Committee of DMACC, member-Iowa State University President Advisory Council, past chairman-Story County United Way, board member-Board of Governors Iowa State University Foundation, Ames Rotary Club, Order of the Knoll-Cornerstone Guild, Ames Golf and Country Club, board member of Firstar Bank, board member of the Ames Seed Capital Fund and board member of the Ames Economic Development Commission. Erb and Margaret have been significant philanthropists to the Ames and Iowa State University communities, including gifting: Margaret Hunziker Garden House at Reiman Gardens, DMACC Hunziker Complex, Hunziker Sports Complex, Auditorium in the Ralph A. Olsen Building, Ames High School football field improvements and many more projects around Iowa State University and the Ames community. Erb felt one of his greatest accomplishments was his family, whom he loved very much. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, family vacations, cards, dancing, summers at Clear Lake and ISU athletics. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, and six sons. Sons of Ames include Dean (Darlene) Hunziker and his children, Tim (Cathy) Hunziker, Jeff (Char) Hunziker and Dan (Ali) Hunziker; Jon (Bonnie) Hunziker and his children, Michelle (Nathan) Bilyeu and Joni (Brian) Tickle; Dave Hunziker and his children, Sherie (Jeff) Paulsen and Shaela Hunziker; Gary (Chris) Hunziker and his children, Megan (Joe) Mulvihill and Andy (Kelsey) Hunziker. Son Steve (Susan) and his family, Sam (Hilary) Hunziker, Will Hunziker and Anna Hunziker, reside in Colorado, and son Robert (Jane) Hunziker and his son, Jack Hunziker, live in California. Erb is also survived by his niece Dianne (Terry) Schwalier, of Knoxville, Tenn., and a nephew, Rich (Kay) Kincl, of Tallahassee, Fla., and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Vinola Kincl. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a charity of your choice in memory of Erb.
