Erik Denison Hoppe, son of Michael and Ida Hoppe, was born on September 28,1870,at Copenhagen, Denmark, and departed this life on March 11, 1952, at Seneca, Kansas, after a lingering illiness, at the age of 81 years, five months, and 12 days. When he was four years old his father died and, at an early age, he began working to make his way in the world. He attended school in Demark, and also after coming to the States. At the age of 15 he came to the United States, working his way on the ocean trip. He settled at Corning, working on cattle ranches and other places, enduring the many hardships of the early pioneer. Five years later, his mother came to the states and settled at Chicago,where she resided until her death, in February 1919. Mr. Hoppe was confirmed in the Lutheran faith while still living in Denmark and received much enjoyment in attending church services at Corning, Goff and Seneca, when his health permitted. On March 20, 1894, he was married to Miss Anna Brack, at the home of her parents south of Wetmore. They established their home in Brown county, near the Indian Reservation. Later, for several years their home was east of Goff on the farm where their son, Oscar, now lives. In 1918, Mr. and Mrs. Hoppe purchased the Samuel Sheets farm, one mile west of Corning, which since has been the family home. Mr. and Mrs. Hoppe were the parents of five children, all of whom, with their mother survive, and were in attendance at the funeral. They are: Mrs. Ida Graffa, Concordia; Oscar Hoppe, Goff; Mrs. Julia Pfiester, Topeka; Milton Hoppe, Corning and Mrs. Fern Holt, Kansas City, Mo. There are seventeen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Niels Mikkelsen, Chicago. There are several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Funeral services were held at 12 o'clock, thursday afternoon, at the Roderick Funeral home, at Wetmore, conducted by Rev. Earl Church, pastor of the Baptist church of Wetmore. Mrs. Ina Spencer sang two beautiful hymns. Casket bearers were: Tra Payne, Fred Graffa, Rollie Cox, Robert McKee, Vernon Brack and Fritz Nissen. There were beautiful floral tributes. Burial was in the family lot in the Wetmore cemetery.
