Description	:	Erma Burkey was born September 9, 1917, on a farm southwest of Milford, NE., to John and Sarah (Stutzman) Yeackley, the second of four children, and passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013, at the assisted living unit at Memorial Hospital in Seward, NE. Read More	Erma Burkey was born September 9, 1917, on a farm southwest of Milford, NE., to John and Sarah (Stutzman) Yeackley, the second of four children, and passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013, at the assisted living unit at Memorial Hospital in Seward, NE. Erma accepted Christ as her personal savior and was baptized in her youth at East Fairview Mennonite Church, Milford, NE. She attended Country School District #47 and later spent two 6-week terms studying at Hesston College in Hesston, KS. Erma moved to Iowa where she was a cook in various people's homes in Iowa City, IA. On January 16, 1940, she was united in marriage to Floyd Burkey and to this union four children were born: Janet, John, Paulene and Loree. They were later blessed with the adoption of Kathy. Erma was a service-oriented person, and was active in many different things in her life. She was a long-time member of the Bellwood Mennonite Church and together with Floyd, were active as youth sponsors and also hosted many bible studies at their home. Many would often describe her as the "prayer warrior" in her family. The Mennonite Central Committee was the center of her life, starting with meat canning, soap making and was one of the first to serve on the Nebraska Mennonite Central Committee Sale Board. She was also instrumental in starting the Et Cetera Thrift Shop in Seward and managed it for many years. Erma also made many quilts and pillows for the Annual Mennonite Central Committee Sale Auction. Her family was obviously very important in her life, which included the fostering of many children. She and Floyd enjoyed the winters in Arizona and after his death, she returned to Glencroft Retirement Center in Glendale, AZ. for 4 years before returning to Seward in 2011. Erma is survived by: daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Stan Sommerfeld, Sharon Springs, KS., Paulene and Jim Anderson, Phoenix, AZ. and Kathy and Tim Wiens, Newton, KS.; son and daughter-in-law, John and Brenda Burkey, Milford, NE.; Loree Burkey and Loree's special friends, Elma Schugg and Carol Younkin, both of Phoenix, AZ.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; special children, Newt Zimmerman, Mark Floyd, Rick Shilhan and Terry Jantz; sister, Nola Schmidt, Milford, NE.; sisters-in-law, Agnes Yeackley, and Joyce Gamble, both of Milford, NE. and Esther Nisly, of Independence, OR.; brother-in-law, Lloyal Burkey, Milford, NE. and a host of relatives and friends. Erma was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Floyd in 2003, a daughter, Loree in 2008, and brothers, Joe and Melvin Yeackley. Interment was in The Blue Mound Cemetery, Milford, NE.
