There will be a prayer service at the church 7 p.m. Monday with visitation beginning 5:30 p.m. Erna Loretta Baer, daughter of Mary (Schnaible) and Emanuel Baer, was born at Bangor, S.D., on April 11, 1908. She moved with her family to Java and then to the "Kingman" house in Selby. At the age of 14, Erna played the piano for silent movies at the Selby Opera House. She graduated from Selby High School in 1926 and attended Northern State Teacher's College in Aberdeen, receiving a rural teacher's certificate. She taught at the Trailside School and the Spring Valley School where she received $10 a month. Always the teacher, at the age of 93 she was going to try to teach people to be friendly. Erna married Ed Zabel on June 21, 1931. They settled on the Zabel farm southwest of Selby. She always said that Ed could have married a country girl but he chose her, a city girl, instead-a city gal who had a lot to learn, like cutting up chickens, cooking for threshers, driving tractor and slopping hogs. They lived on the farm until 1957, when they moved into Selby. Ed died June 13, 1977, and since January 2001, Erna lived at the Selby Good Samaritan Center. She was a member of the Jolly Club and a board member of the Selby library for many years. She also was a member of the Selby United Methodist Church and the Ladie's Aid for many years. Erna is survived by three children: Verne (Marcie) Zabel, Arlys Brown, and Sharon Wolff, all of Selby; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great- greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father on May 25, 1925, her mother on July 28, 1926, her husband and six siblings (Clara Bastian, Lee Baer, Herb Baer, E.D. Baer, and two infant brothers). Honorary bearers will be the Selby Good Samaritan Center staff. Casketbearers will be Erna's grandchildren: Tim Zabel of Lowry, Kathy Sougstad of Mandan, ND., Dan Zabel and Renae Wolff of Bismarck, ND., Deb Davison of Miles City, MT., Brad Brown of Selby, Greg Brown of Watford City, ND, and Chad Wolff of Sioux Falls.
