Speed Lamkin was born in Albion, IL on February 12, 1920, to Ernest and Nella Jane McKay Lamkin, the sixth child of nine siblings. Speed Lamkin was born in Albion, IL on February 12, 1920, to Ernest and Nella Jane McKay Lamkin, the sixth child of nine siblings. He quit school after the eighth grade, desiring to work and help out with family expenses. He was well liked in the small Illinois town and worked at a clothing store, managed a roller skating rink and a bakery, where he was given the nickname, Speed, because of his slow, perfect way of decorating cakes. He was drafted into the Army Infantry in September 1941, served in the Aleutian Islands for over two years, then went to Germany, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart at the hospital in Sweeps, France. He was discharged in September 1945. Back in Albion for a short time, he then made his way to Chelan, WA, where his sister lived. There he met Ruth Davis, the love of his life. They were married on February 5, 1949. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, at the home; five children, Lana (Clyde) Zabrexnik of Wenatchee, Larry (Janet) Lamkin of East Wenatchee, WA, Les (Pat) Lamkin of Point Lay, AK, Loranna (Tom) Pickett of Waterville and Lonnie (Cindy) Lamkin of Puyallup; 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Doris Lamkin of Evansville, IN; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son; his parents; five brothers; and three sisters. Services will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene in Wenatchee, on Friday, February 6, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Scott Hargrove officiating. An Interment Service will be held at the Fraternal Cemetery at Chelan, WA at a later date for family and friends. Memorials may be made in his name to the First Church of the Nazarene in Wenatchee.
