Read More	Ernie was born March 25, 1930, to Melville Clemons "Clem" and Mary (Chilton) Ellis on the family farm near Givin, Iowa. He attended a one-room schoolhouse and graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1948. After graduating, he entered the US Navy during the Korean War and served on the aircraft carrier, USS Boxer. After being honorably discharged from the service, he attended William Penn College on the G.I. Bill and completed his bachelor's degree while working for the Rock Island Railroad as a telegrapher, and later as a chemist at the train repair shop in Silvis, Illinois. He was united in marriage to Geraldine "Gerry" Masters on July 3, 1955, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Their son, Brian Leigh, was born in Oskaloosa on May 26, 1957. Ernie's career led him to work for the US Department of Defense as an inspector in the Davenport area. He later transferred to Washington DC to work for the Defense Logistics Agency in Total Quality Management. He was ultimately named Deputy Director, a position that allowed him to visit many parts of the world including China (as a guest quality consultant), France and the United Kingdom. He represented the United States at a NATO conference in Brussels, Belgium. He also completed a master's degree and the Executive Program at the University of Virginia. Ernie retired in 1995, ending his Defense Department career as Deputy Commander of the Defense Construction Supply Center in Columbus, Ohio – driving his beloved 1966 Mustang convertible into work every day. Ernie returned to the Des Moines area to be close to his family. He began a new career as a builder of luxury homes in the Quail Park and Glen Oaks developments. He obtained his real estate license and took the classes to maintain it well into his 80s. His son, Brian, often referred to his father as a "gentleman farmer" as Ernie continued to improve and expand the family farm near Givin. He was never happier than on a tractor as he shored up a riverbank or cleared rocks and other debris. He was also very involved in the National Capital Area Boy Scouts, Troop 1533, and later served as Board of Directors Treasurer for the Kenton, Ohio Boy Scout Council. He was very proud of the fact both his son and grandson had earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He loved telling his grandchildren stories about his childhood experiences and his travels around the world.
