Description	:	Ernest Kruse, age 85, of Ackley died on Monday, March 18, 2013 at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday March 22, 2013 at St. John's U.C.C. in Ackley with burial at Steamboat Rock. Visitation will be 4-7 Thursday at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley. The family has established a memorial fund to be designated at a later date. Ernest H. Kruse was born January 10, 1927 in Sheffield, Iowa, son of Tom and Kate (Folkerts) Kruse. The family later moved south of Ackley to Abbott. At the age of 9 he went to live with his paternal aunt and uncle, Okko and Stena Jaspers in rural Hardin County where he attended country school and assisted with the care of his disabled cousin. He graduated from Steamboat Rock High School and when he turned 18 years old, he enlisted in the Navy. He served on the U.S.S. Chicago in the Pacific with time in Hawaii, Japan and China. After discharge he attended one semester at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, where he met his future bride, Eileen Kruetzmann, in English class. He went on to graduate from CCCC, a business college, in Des Moines. After a brief time at the Bondurant Elevator he returned home to help his father manage Kruse Grain Company in Cleves, Iowa. Over the years Ernie enjoyed success marketing grain and customizing feeds for local farmers. He was the unofficial "Mayor of Cleves" and the elevator office was known as a place to have a cup of coffee and catch up on all the local news. He conducted much of his business with local farmers speaking Plat, or Low German. On April 28, 1951, Ernie and Eileen where married in the Zion E & R Church by Eileen's father, Rev. Arthur Kruetzmann. They had two children, Ellen and Edwin. Ernie has been a long time member of St. John's United Church of Christ. He enjoyed being involved in church life, serving on the church council, treasurer, Sunday school teacher and board of directors of the Mayflower Home. He was also active in the American Legion, Lions, and Iowa Feed and Grain Association, Iowa Friendship Force. He served 9 years on the Ackley - Geneva School Board, one term as President. He was one of the original founders of United Suppliers and served on the Board of Directors. In 2004 Ernie and Eileen were honored to be Grand Marshalls of the Annual Sauerkraut Parade in Ackley. Ernie loved his family and enjoyed special relationships with all of them. He also had a passion for trout fishing. Nothing made him happier than walking along a stream in NE Iowa casting for that illusive fish. Ernie passed away on Monday, March 18, 2013 at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Eileen of Ackley; a son Edwin (Yoko) of San Diego, California; a daughter Ellen (Dr. Lance) Vanderloo of Waterloo; grandson Chad (Allison) Weber of Marshall, Illinois; granddaughters Brooke (Tyler) Knowles of Waunakee, Wisconsin and Aya Kruse of San Diego, California. He has four great grandsons, Thomas and Jacob Weber and Carter and Reid Knowles. Other survivors include a brother, Arnold (Beulah) Kruse of Jamestown, North Dakota and 3 sisters, Irene Espe of Cedar Rapids; Ruth Bleeker of Steamboat Rock; and Shirley (Al) Meester of Dike; sisters-in-law Lavonne Kruse, of Iowa Falls; Evelyn (Mervin) Reifschnieder of Hubbard and Edith (Royce) Fichtner of Ankeny and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, and infant son, Earl David, his brothers Ronald, Donald and Tom, brothers-in-law Darrell Bleeker and Arnold Espe and niece Suzanne Kruse. He was a much-loved brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will always be remembered for his generosity and love of people.
