Read More	Hero's Sendoff Harrisonburg's `Mr. Firefighter' Shifflett Honored, Laid To Rest By JEFF MELLOTT News-Record Staff Writer A ringing bell at Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg on Tuesday summoned Ernest Howard Shifflett Sr. to his final call. Shifflett, 77, died last Thursday and was carried to his final resting place in a flag-draped casket on a fire truck. The truck was part of a long procession of emergency and other vehicles that slowly passed north on Main Street from the Harrisonburg Baptist Church to East Market Street and Woodbine Cemetery. The procession moved under an American flag hung from crossed fire ladders on East Market Street to honor Shifflett before getting to the cemetery. As the procession rolled by, uniformed fire department members and police at intersections placed their right hand over their heart as a final salute to the man who began his fire service career as a teen-ager in 1935 as a volunteer for Hose Co. No. 4 and who became synonymous with fire and rescue in Harrisonburg. Friends and family gathered at Hose Co. No. 4 after the services on Tuesday. Hundreds, many in uniform, mourned Shifflett's passing and heard the Harrisonburg native eulogized by Page Sencindiver as a man of excellent judgment, a man who was benevolent and charitable. And he was a man who always answered the call for his family, community and country, said Sencindiver. "Ernest cared so much about the people he came in contact with," said Sencindiver, a former president and life member of Hose Co. No. 4. Sencindiver said he had many fond remembrances of Shifflett. "He had the twinkle in his eye, but he knew how to point that finger so you could understand it," he said. He was also praised as a true hero by Heartland Christian Fellowship Pastor Tim McAvoy. "In a world where we immortalize those who are called heroes because they can dribble a ball or catch a pass, it's refreshing to honor a man who was a hero in every sense of the word," said McAvoy. Shifflett, an Army veteran, was appointed Harrisonburg's assistant fire chief in 1951 and held that post until 1983. During that term, Shifflett also held the post of acting fire chief on different occasions. "At an age when most of us are winding down, Ernest was winding up," said McAvoy. At the age of 55, Shifflett joined the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad and for a time was credited with going on 90 percent of the emergency calls. Shifflett was honored as Rescue Squadman of the Year from 1977 through 1983. He was firefighter of the year in 1977. But Sencindiver said Shifflett was most proud of his family. And Sencindiver said Shifflett had a way of making everyone feel welcome. Shifflett married Naomi Cupie Tusing, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Nancy S. Puffenbarger of Harrisonburg, and two sons, Harrisonburg fire inspector Ernest Shifflett Jr. and Harrisonburg fire chief Larry W. Shifflett, and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by four sisters and four brothers and a number of nieces and nephews. In a tribute to Shifflett, McAvoy said that Shifflett epitomized the Good Samaritan.
