Description	:	Ernest Jerome "E. J." Cantonwine was the oldest son of Wesley and Clara (Cram) Cantonwine, the grandson of George C. & Mary Melinda (Lewis) Cantonwine, and the great-grandson of Charles and Mary Magdalena (Scholl) Cantonwine. Charles, the patriarch of the Cantonwine family, immigrated to America from Prussia in 1806, arriving in Philadelphia, Penn., aboard the ship Orlando. The ship's passenger list shows Chr. Kuntentwine, single man. The name Kuntentwine later evolved to Cantonwine, and Charles appears to be the only surnamed Kuntentwine/ Cantonwine to immigrate to America. Ernest married Bessie Kershaw November 29, 1899 in Walla Walla county, Washington. They later divorced. On July 4, 1930, Ernest married Madge (Crites) Gollihur in Vancouver, Clark County, WA. Madge was the daughter of Isaac & Carolyn (Smith) Crites. Madge died at age 88 in Walla Walla, WA September 14, 1976. Cantonwine attended the schools of Dixie in the acquirement of his general education and prepared himself to manage his affairs in a businesslike manner by taking a course in a commercial college at Walla Walla. He remained at home, assisting his father with the farm work, until he attained his majority and then took charge of the operation of the homestead, which he managed for ten years. In the meantime he had acquired title to personal property which he sold at the end of that period. He then engaged in the undertaking business for five years, after which he disposed of his interests in that line and again turned his attention to agricultural pursuits. He owns four hundred and seventy-five acres of well improved land north of Dixie and keeps its operation well in hand. . . . He belongs to Enterprise Lodge, No. 2, I.O.O.F., Woodmen of America, and of the Loyal Order of Moose, in which he is also an officer. He is a typical western man, alert, confident of the future, self-reliant and resourceful, and he has been a factor in the advancement of the agricultural interests of Walla Walla county. Cantonwine, 93, of 34 Withva, died Thursday morning in a local nursing home. He had been in ill health the last three years. In earlier years he was quite prominent, having served on the city school board from 1917-1919; as state representative, 1919-1920 and as county commissioner 1921-1927. In earlier years he was in the funeral home operation. Cantonwine was born in Walla Walla Nov. 12, 1876, his parents having been W. J. and Clara [nee Cram] Cantonwine. His birthplace was on "South First someplace," he told a Union-Bulletin reporter on a visit to the newspaper office July 19, 1950. He attended Walla Walla Business College but had farmed most of his life, having given up active participation in managing his agricultural properties in recent years. He spent some time in California in late years until his ill health began some three years ago. Before his last hospitalization he had suffered a broken leg. Cantonwine had belonged to the Odd Fellows and Moose lodges here, having been a charter member of the latter fraternal organization no longer in existence here. He was also a member of the First Nazarene Church. Cantonwine and Madge Crites were married here July 4, 1930. During the summer of 1950 Mrs. and Mrs. Cantonwine left for Portland and Seaside to spend the summer, planning to go on to Long Beach, Calif., where his father died. In earlier years the Cantonwines were members of the Methodist church. Besides his widow, Madge, at the home, Cantonwine is survived by a step-son, Robert Gollihur of Portland, a grandson, five great-grandchildren and a nephew.
