He was born January 23, 1914, in Hodgeman County, Hanston, KS; the son of John Walter and Daisy Frances Hawkins Salmans. He lived on the farm for 22 years, then went to Syracuse, KS to become a hotel chef at the Hotel Ames, then to Kingman as owner and operator of his own café, “Ernie’s Café.” He moved to Pratt in 1964 to work for the Ford dealership where he worked for 41 years and also worked for the police Department as a school cross-walk guard helping children across Highway... Read More	Pratt, KS Ernest J. Salmans, 100, died September 28th at Pittsburg, KS. He was born January 23, 1914, in Hodgeman County, Hanston, KS; the son of John Walter and Daisy Frances Hawkins Salmans. He lived on the farm for 22 years, then went to Syracuse, KS to become a hotel chef at the Hotel Ames, then to Kingman as owner and operator of his own café, “Ernie’s Café.” He moved to Pratt in 1964 to work for the Ford dealership where he worked for 41 years and also worked for the police Department as a school cross-walk guard helping children across Highway 54 for twenty-one years, retiring from both in Dec. 2005. He married Beulah Buchanan of Kingman in 1939. She preceded him in death in 2009. Survivors include daughters-in-law Susan Salmans, Willard, MO and Linda Salmans, Grandview, MO; a sister Beulah Edmisson and husband Robert of Johnson, KS; sister-in-law Pat Buchanan-Clouse, Hutchinson, KS; three grandsons, Scott Salmans and wife Traci, Michael Salmans and wife Debra, and Marine Sgt. Douglas Kraft and wife Hanna; eight great-grandchildren, Brittany and Kaiden Salmans, Lauren and Riley Kraft and soon-to-arrive, Lincoln Kraft, and Hope, Luke and Levi Salmans. He was preceded in death by a daughter Linda Salmans Kraft, sons Randy Salmans and Terry Salmans, four brothers, Clarence, Everett, Ray, and Virgil, and two sisters, Lena and Mildred. Friends my sign the register book from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 3, 2014 at Larrison Mortuary, Pratt, KS. Funeral service will be Saturday, October 4th at 1:00 p.m. at The First Christian Church, Pratt, KS with Rev. Robin Colerick-Shinkle officiating. The casket will remain closed. Burial will follow at Walnut Hill Cemetery, Kingman, KS. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church Youth Club, Pratt, KS and the Pratt Health Foundation.
