Mr. Hotovy, 69, died Friday, July 22, at the Butler County Health Center following a seven-month bout with leukemia. The Mass of Christian Burial was co-celebrated by Msgr. Adrian Herbek and Father Doug Fuller. Members of the Fourth Degree and Third Degree Knights of Columbus and members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars attended as a body. Ernest J. Hotovy, the son of Joseph J. and Anna Matejcek Hotovy, was born Jan. 10, 1925, at David City. He was a 1942 graduate of Brainard High School, attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and the Lincoln School of Commerce. On June 22, 1948, he was unnited in marriage to Margaret Ann Rech at St. Mary's Church. Four daughters were born to this union. He lived in the David City area all of his life. At the time of his death, he was the owner of Hotovy Furniture Store for 46 years. In March 1948 he bought Mike Hoffman's interest in the Hoffman-Peters Furniture Store. About four years later, Jack Peters sold his interest in the furniture store to Ernie and since that time it has been known as Hotovy Furniture. Ernie was a charter member of the David City Jaycees when the chapter was organized on May 20, 1946. In 1963, he served as president of the David City Area Chamber of Commerce. He also was one of the organizers of the Sertoma Club, now known as the Fellowship Club. When the Downtown Redevelopment Project was undertaken on the north side of the square, Ernie was one of the first property owners to sign up to have his building included in the project. He also served on the steering committee which carried the project to completion. During World War II, he served with the Marines in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He received the David City Business Community Anchor Award in 1994 and served as a Community Ak-Sar-Ben Ambassador. He leaves his wife, Margaret Ann; daughters and sons-in-law, Merry Kaye and Mike Sullivan of Milwaukee, Wis., Michele and Thomas Hogan of Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Marcia and Link Wilson of St. Paul, Minn., and a daughter, Melissa Hotovy of David City; a sister, Adeline Petersen of David City and two grandchildren. His parents and a brother, George, preceded him in death.
