Description	:	Ernest Lee Kling was born September 25, 1922 at Wetmore, Kansas, eighth of eleven children of Herbert Charles and Beryl Evelyn Williams Kling and was a longtime resident of Hiawatha, KS. He died Tuesday evening, February 15, 2011 at Maple Heights Nursing Home, Hiawatha where he had been a resident since October, 2010. He was 88. Ernest attended Wetmore schools. Read More	Ernest Lee Kling was born September 25, 1922 at Wetmore, Kansas, eighth of eleven children of Herbert Charles and Beryl Evelyn Williams Kling and was a longtime resident of Hiawatha, KS. He died Tuesday evening, February 15, 2011 at Maple Heights Nursing Home, Hiawatha where he had been a resident since October, 2010. He was 88. Ernest attended Wetmore schools. On September 28, 1943 he married Eileen Ada Cawood at Lyndon, Kansas. They resided at Holton, Kansas, Topeka, Kansas, Corning, Kansas and Goff, Kansas before moving to Hiawatha in 1959 where he has resided until 2010. He was a veteran of WWII serving as tank commander in the 169th Infantry Cannon Company of the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. During that time he earned the Bronze Star, the Philippine Liberation medal, the Good Conduct medal, the American Defense medal, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Presidential Citation, the Bronze Arrowhead and Battlestar on a ribbon and a certificate for: "Meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy in WWII in the Asiatic Pacific theatre of operations". Upon his discharge he worked briefly for the City of Holton before pursuing his career as a plasterer and stonemason. He remained in this profession the remainder of his life. He also worked several years at Lansing State Penitentiary as a guard, at NEK-CAP Head Start as a bus driver and later drove the Brown County Senior Citizen Taxi. Ernie coordinated military honor guard cemetery services for veterans for the surrounding Hiawatha communities for many years. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, the American Legion, and the Masonic Lodges. Ernie was a former member of the Abdallah Shrine of Overland Park, Kansas. He was commander of V.F.W. Post #5210 for many years and still held that position at the time of his death. Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Walter Herbert Kling, a grandson, Jeremy Ray Coots, 4 sisters: Madeline Wolfe, Inez Larson, LaVern Bell, Mary Helen Musick; 4 brothers: Clifford, Francis (Barney), H.C.(Clinton), and Delmas Kling. Survivors include his wife Eileen, 3 daughters: Nancy (Bob) Horne of Alta Vista, Kansas, Melodye (Roger) Hathaway of Hiawatha, and Denise (Jim) Wolney also of Hiawatha, a son, Kent of Ponca City, Oklahoma; 7 grandchildren:. LaDonna (Brad) Flynn of Federal Way, Washington, Scott Horne of Portsmouth, Virginia, Bartholomew (Lori) Kling of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Amanda (Nathan) Jacobson of Horton, Kansas, Jillian Gilbert of Beloit, Kansas, Colby Gilbert of Beloit, Kansas, and Tess Wolney of Hiawatha, Kansas; 10 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Ernie was an avid cook, coin and gun collector, gardener and storyteller. He was a great friend and neighbor to all, and knew no strangers. He spent many hours helping many in the community. He will be remembered for his quick wit and keen interest of all things around him, his alert mind and memory by his relatives, friends and neighbors and will be sadly missed by all. Funeral services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 19, at the First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha with Pastor Randy Quinn officiating. Cremation will follow service with graveside service and inurnment at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 26, at the Wetmore Cemetery. Military honor will be a courtesy of the Brown County Honor Guard.
