Hopkins, 75, a prominent building contractor and developer in northwestern Rhode Island, died yesterday at Fogarty Memorial Hospital, North Smithfield. He was the husband of Evelyn (Capwell) Hopkins. A lifelong resident of Glocester, he was a son of the late Ernest E. and Emma (Irons) Hopkins. Mr. Hopkins got his start in home building at the very roots of the business. Upon graduating from high school in Providence, he went to work for his father, cutting lumber on farms in the northwestern section of the state. It was during the 1930s depression that he finished high school. In those times Mr. Hopkins said woodland was plentiful and his father would buy farms in order to harvest the lumber. In the winter they cut lumber, and in the summer built homes. "The 1938 Hurricane ruined the business." Mr. Hopkins added. During the years he was a woodcutter, he attended night school at the former Bryant-Stratton business school. Mr. Hopkins worked during World War II at shipyards in Providence and Bristol. At the end of the war he began building homes in Glocester and Smithfield. Mr. Hopkins started his first housing development in Greenville in 1950-51. Sixty homes were erected there. Since then, groups of homes have been built by his firm in Smithfield and Glocester. He is responsible for the Crestview and Maplewoods plats, among others. He was president of Ernest S. Hopkins, Inc., the Maplecrest Realty Co. and the E.N.E. Realty Company. He was a life national director of the National Association of Home Builders. He was president of the Chepachet Cemetery Association. He was a past president of the Rhode Island Home Builders, the Chepachet Volunteer Fire Company, and the New England Regional Council of Builders. Active in civic affairs, he was a past master of Chepachet Grange 38 and Friendship Lodge 7 F.&A.M., of Chepachet. He was a former member of the Smithfield Lions Club, a member of the Glocester Country Club and a corporator of Citizens Savings & Trust Bank. Mr. Hopkins , a Republican, was elected Glocester town moderator for seven terms, serving in that post from 1957 to 1971. Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, a daughter, and five grandchildren.
