He became ill a few days previous to his death and was taken to the hospital Tuesday, August 17. His condition was such that a surgical operation was imperative and was performed with the hope that his life might be saved, but after the operation the surgeons gave very little assurance for a recovery, for they found unusual and alarming conditions,and his family was appraised of the seriousness of his case. He was visited by his pastor early Sunday morning, and he was prepared for what was the inevitable end. Ernest William George Hoult was born November 24, 1894, on Bowen's Prairie, Northeast of Monticello. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. John W. Hoult. He received his education in the local school and at the Monticello high school. When still young he entered the World war, where he spent a year in training at Camp Dodge, and nine months overseas in France and Germany. He was a member of the 88th Division, and when discharged held the office of sergeant. He was married November 2, 1922 to Rena H. Zimmerman, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will R. Zimmerman of Amber. For one year after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Hoult resided on the homestead farm north of Monticello,thence they moved to Wayne township, which was their home thereafter. Mr. Hoult was of the age of 31 years, 8 months, and 29 days at the time of his death. He is survived by his widow; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Hoult, of Monticello; two brothers, John and George, both of Monticello; three sisters, Mrs. May Smith of Canada; Mrs. Ernest Hubbard of Anamosa; and Mrs. Glenn Eilers of Monticello, and his grandfather on his mother's side, William Hopper of England. The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at Wayne Zion's Lutheran church. The decedent's pastor, Rev. J.P. Wilims, officiated, taking for his text, Matt. 14:24-27. The funeral was largely attended not only by the members of the church but by a large circle of friends, neighbors and acquaintances in Wayne, Lovell and Monticello townships. Mr. Hoult was well and favorably known on account of his friendly character and sociable disposition. His sudden and unexpected death came as a shock to his acquaintances. The widow and the relatives of Ernest have the sincere sympathy of all their friends, but they can be consoled with the knowledge that he was prepared for death, and that his life was such as to add luster to his memory.
