She`s doing it as much for herself as she is for her 96-year-old mother, Ernestine Morey. Mrs. Morey was born in Port Anson on 21 Feb 1912. At six days old, she was given to her paternal grandfather Elias Wellman and his second wife Matilda. She was 52 years old when the man she had grown up thinking was her brother, John Wellman, told her he was really her father. Up to this point, Mrs. Morey says, she never had any reason to think her parents weren`t her parents. `Never, never, never,` she says was she told anything different. Her adopted mother treated her just the same as her own children. `She was the only mother I knew anything about,` says Mrs. Morey. `I guess she wanted to keep it that way,` she says of why she was never told the truth. `Knowing her I think that was the answer to that one, it goes no farther than that.` Mrs. Morey left Port Anson when she was 17 and came to Corner Brook. It was here that she married Basil Morey and they raised nine children, two others died as infants. The truth comes out In 1964 she travelled to Springdale for a family wedding. John Wellman was also there and it was then he decided to tell her. `There was some talk,` she recalls `and it just came out.` In the days that followed Mrs. Morey and her father talked a bit but she never really got any details of what happened. Her mother`s name was Susannah Burton, and she was about 17 years old when she gave birth. John Wellman would later join the navy and serve in the First World War. He would then leave Newfoundland and settle in New York, marry and have other children. Now Mrs. Morey wishes she had asked more questions. `I suppose I just thought there`s lots of time, I`ll get the chance.` Despite exchanging letters and invitations to visit, the two never saw each other again. John Wellman died in 1976 and after that Mrs. Morey believed she would never find out anything else about her mother. The search for information Mrs. Morey never told her husband, who died the year before her father, or her children of what she had learned about her real parents. It would be years before O`Quinn stumbled across the information when she opened a birth certificate that her mother had sent for and saw that it didn`t list a mother`s name. For about the last six years O`Quinn has been trying to fill in the gaps. O`Quinn says what they have learned has come courtesy of a family historian in Springdale. Norm Wellman`s research shows Susannah Burton marrying a Baker and that she is buried in Bonavista. O`Quinn contacted the Department of Vital Statistics to find out more but had no luck because of a lack of information. Her next step was to appeal to the public through a request for information in Diana Lynn Tibert`s `Roots to the Past` column. That request appeared in The Western Star on Jan. 31. Tibert`s research found another Susannah, whose maiden and married surnames were both Burton. This woman died in Beaumont in 1964. However, O`Quinn believes that Susannah Baker is her grandmother. A few years ago they were able to track down Susannah Baker`s brother in Springdale. Mrs. Morey visited with him and had planned to return to ask questions about her mother but the man died before she had a chance. O`Quinn says there are three things her mother would like to learn - who did her mother marry, did she have anymore children and where is she buried. Mrs. Morey is doubtful that she`ll find any more information at this stage in her life. `I don`t imagine I`ll learn very much,` she says adding `I`m a little late in years.` But still she`d like to know. In the years since learning her real father`s identity she has become close with her half-siblings and their families. If she does have more family on her mother`s side she`d like to get to know them, too. For O`Quinn, the search is about learning more about her family`s history and of the grandmother she never know. `I`d like to be able to go to some cemetery and see (a headstone for Susannah) and say that`s my grandmother.` Ernestine Morey In loving memory of our dear mother who passed away one year ago today, 21 Feb 1912 – 15 May 2012.
