He was a talented optical mechanic, having received his education at a school in Kuernbach. He became an apprentice to an optician named Oechsle. Young Ernst decided to join his brother and sisters in Michigan in March of 1852, after spending some time in New York. It was only a short time later that he decided farming was not his calling. He returned to New York, then moved to Louisville. But his brothers convinced him to come to Milwaukee (1854), where he was well known for his development and manufacture of optical instruments. The following is from The History of Bay County: Ernst Frank was 21 years of age when he came to America. He had been educated as an optician and was skilled in the manufacturing of mathematical and philosophical instruments, as well as those of his trade, all of these being almost entirely hand-made. He arrived in New York City in April 1851, and started for Saginaw, Michigan, to visit his brothers and sisters, who lived on a farm about six miles from the city of Saginaw. This year he declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States, as it was his intention to make this country his home. He helped on the farm until November 1851, when he returned to New York City to work at his occupation. After reaching New York he was employed first by Benjamin Pike & Sons, opticians, with whom he continued for two years. In 1852 he went to Louisville, Kentucky, and followed his trade there for a short time, but in the fall of the year 1854, he removed to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he established a business. He continued there until the spring of 1863, and then came to Bay City. He opened here a cigar and tobacco store and also did something in the way of fire insurance, and continued this business until 1875, when he disposed of his store in order to give his whole attention to insurance. During the reunion of the American Franks in Titibawassee in June of 1859, Ernst was introduced to the young niece of Edward Barck, Ernsts brother-in-law. Emma Scheuermann had recently come to America to join the Frank and Barck families. In Germany she had worked for Pastor and Frau Frank. Ernst and Emma were married in October of the same year. They lived in Milwaukee for a time, where their first two children were born and died. In 1863, they moved to Bay City, Michigan, where they had nine more children, seven of whom lived to adulthood. Ernst and Emma are buried in Pinelawn Cemetery in Bay City. During his lifetime, he served as Treasurer of Bay City, postmaster during the Grover Cleveland administration, and as a member of the school board. Among Ernsts traits were his wonderful sense of humor, which he inherited from his father. His brother August wrote, Ernst has such a selection of jokes, as well as a good imitation of fathers pranks, so that we sometimes have to laugh ourselves almost to death. He also had the gift of music which runs throughout the Frank family. He possessed a fine tenor voice, and participated in singing clubs and music societies. On May 23, 1913, Ernsts beloved Emma died. Ernst survived her by six months, dying on December 2 of the same year at the age of 84 years.
