Description	:	Ernst was born in Thuringer, Germany. At the age of sixteen he went to work in the coal and salt mines in Wilsleben. It is there that he met the love of his life Johanna (Hannah) Dorothea Juliana Peulecke. Faithful Lutherans Ernst and Johanna were married August 31, 1856 in the Lutheran church in Wilsleben. During these times most land was owned by the principality with only very small sections available for rental and allowed to be farmed independently. Faithful Lutherans Ernst and Johanna were married August 31, 1856 in the Lutheran church in Wilsleben. During these times most land was owned by the principality with only very small sections available for rental and allowed to be farmed independently. Because of this few people wanting to farm could make a living off the land and were forced to mine or work the land for the monarchy. Ernst had such a strong desire for farming, to be his own man, to grow the crops he wanted he knew he would need to go where land was readily available and that was America; the land of opportunity. In 1866 Ernst and Johanna joined a group of Germany immigrants wishing for the similar freedoms and set sail for America. Great grandfather's story goes they were in the port with the other German immigrants and heard of an offer of free land if they would settle the land in the name of France. The land was in the Yucatan of Mexico. They group agreed to form a colony under the direction of Maximillion and sailed for Mexico. Shortly after arrival the group was placed under arrest by the Mexican government. The German colonist were denied their freedom. The Marr's along with the rest of their German colonist experienced illness, the lack of food and declining financial resources. Unable to speak Spanish they found themselves further isolated. Eventually the group was allowed to leave if they agreed to board a ship and leave Mexico. Unfortunately, before they could leave further tragedy beset the Marr family their worsening and deplorable conditions resulted in the death of their little daughter. In 1867 the Marr's arrived in New Jersey. In New Jersey just making ends meet Ernst remain unsatisfied. Learning of the fertile land in Iowa in 1869 the family traveled by train to Dover Township, Winneshiek County and eventually settled in Eldorado. Ernst never lost his dreams and desires to work the land and be his own man. He found this in Iowa. Ernst was a faithful member of the German Lutheran Church of Eldorado. The church now is known as St. Peter Lutheran Church. His body rests in the church cemetery.
