Description	:	Erschel Arlen Moon was born at home on June 20, 1931 at Attica, Iowa. He was the oldest of two sons born to Elba and Cora (Toll) Moon. Erschel worked with his father and grandfather at Moon & Son Coal Company and on the family farm during his school years. He graduated from Attica High School before earning an associate degree from Central College in Pella, IA. While serving his country in the U. S. Read More	Erschel Arlen Moon was born at home on June 20, 1931 at Attica, Iowa. He was the oldest of two sons born to Elba and Cora (Toll) Moon. Erschel worked with his father and grandfather at Moon & Son Coal Company and on the family farm during his school years. He graduated from Attica High School before earning an associate degree from Central College in Pella, IA. While serving his country in the U. S. Navy during the Korean war (1952-1956) he was awarded the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service medal, The China Service Medal, the National Defense Service Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. After his military service he received a bachelor’s degree in Accounting in 1961 from Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. He worked for a short time at a bank in Des Moines before returning home to help on the family farm. Erschel spent many years working in the kitchen at the Veteran’s Administration (V.A.) Hospital in Knoxville, IA. On November 28, 2019, Erschel died at the V.A. Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa after suffering a massive stroke at the age of 88. Erschel is survived by his brother; Melvin (Mary) Moon; his nephews and niece; Mike Moon, Mindy (Tony) Palmer, Mark Moon; his great nieces and nephew; Maci Palmer, Cami Palmer and Gunner Moon. He was preceded in death by his parents; Elba and Cora Moon. Erschel loved to spend time on the farm with his cattle and visiting with his friends. He also enjoyed spending holidays with his family. He was a staple in his community and acted as the head of the election poll center in Marion County, Iowa -Indiana Township for many years. He was considered a town legend due to his wealth of information about its history. Everyone enjoyed listening to Erschel’s stories.
