Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 8 at the Hesper Lutheran Church with Rev. Hans Floan officiating. Burial was in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery with military rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements. Erven Oliver Ellingson was born at the home of his parents, Anton and Ida (Hanson) Ellingson, in Winneshiek County on June 22, 1920. He was one of nine children. Erven was baptized at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, by Pastor Brevik and confirmed there by Pastor Bredesen August 25, 1935. He attended Winneshiek County schools. Erven entered the United States Army in June of 1942, serving to his July 1945 discharge with only one 10-day leave at the end of 1942. He was attached to the 10th Army Field Hospital Unit in the 5th and 7th Armies under General George Patton. His duty tour, which began in Oran, Africa, took him through Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, France, and Germany on seven invasions. His field hospital spent more time overseas than any other unit. After the war, he was a life member of the VFW Post #1977 in Decorah. Erven married Thelma Stoen, daughter of Henry and Martina (Sollien) Stoen, at Big Canoe Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, by Pastor William Hexom July 25, 1945. They farmed in Allamakee County for a year and a half before moving to a farm in Hesper Township, Winneshiek County. This was his home for 54 years until he suffered a stroke January 30, 2001. In May of 2001, he became a resident of the Aase Haugen Home. Erven was a member of Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church from 1920 to 1947, Big Canoe Lutheran from 1947 to 1956, and Hesper Lutheran from 1956 until his death. He served on the Big Canoe and Hesper church councils, serving at Hesper when the present church, narthex unit, and parsonage were built. He served on the ASCS committee for 15 years and was a Farm Bureau member. Survivors include his wife, Thelma Ellingson; two sons: Rev. Wayne (Irmgard) Ellingson of Grafton, Iowa, and Robert (Jan Sue) Ellingson of Dike, Iowa; four daughters: Elaine (John) Hafertepe of Richfield, Minn. Ruth (Leon) Kosek of Bloomington, Minn., Janet (Brian) Olson of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Mary (Jeffrey) Ott of Marble Rock, Iowa; ten grandchildren; three sisters: Irene Tilleros and Helen Bergan of Decorah and Bernice Byrnes of Waukon; several sisters and brothers-in-law: Viola Ellingson of Waukon, Eleanor Ellingson, Sophus and Palma Stoen, Raymond and Darlyne Stoen, and Herbert Stoen, all of Decorah and by many nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; twin grandsons; three brothers: Arnold, Julius, and Clifford Ellingson; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Elmer and Tilvina Bigler and Lester and Myrtle Bigler; brothers-in-law Oscar Tilleros, Harold Opheim, Duane Wedo, Mark Byrnes, and Donnie Bergan; and one sister-in-law: Kathryn Stoen.
