Pioneer Citizen of Hamlin Dead; Ill for a Year Hamlin—One of the most highly respected, most useful citizens this community ever had, E. C. Blanchard, died Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock after an illness of a year. His condition was aggravated when his leg was broken last January. Mr. Blanchard, 88 years old, was a man of fine character, successful in farming, a worker in community enterprises. With his death he leaves a large estate of land in addition to his residence in Hamlin. Surviving are his widow; son, Milton, daughter, Mrs. Beulah Schilling, of Los Angeles, daughter, Mrs. Will Bevans, of near Hamlin, all of whom were at home at the time of his death. Mrs. Blanchard is a sister of Mrs. T. T. Gibbs, Mrs. Orpha Spangler, of Hiawatha. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Brethren church at Hamlin, burial in Hamlin cemetery. The son, Milton, who was reared at Hamlin, took engineering at Kansas University, is now a successful railroad man with an exceptionally fine salary, altho he started working at $30 a month. He is chief engineer for the Santa Fe at Los Angeles, is chairman of the engineering committee for a new Los Angeles union station which will cost 10 million dollars. —The Hiawatha Daily World (Hiawatha, KS) Tue. OBITUARY Blanchard—Ervin Clark Blanchard, son of Charles Sherman, Mary Angelea Clark Blanchard, died July 3, 1937, at his home in Hamlin, Kans., at the age of 88 years, 8 months, 11 days. His boyhood to the age of 6 years was spent in New Haven, Addison county, Vermont, the place of his birth, in the year, Oct. 23, 1848. At this time the family came to Kaneville, Ill., where he lived until 1869. At the age of 21 years he came to Kansas, settled on a farm north of Hamlin with his father, who preceded him by one year. In January, 1879, he was married to Henrietta Berkley. To this union was born 3 children, Mrs. W. A. Bevins, of Hamlin, Kans., Milton C., of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Beaula Schilling, also of Los Angeles, Calif. In 1902 the family moved to Hiawatha, residing there 2 years, after which they came to Hamlin, residing here until his departure. He was one of the pioneers of Brown county, preceding the construction of railroads in this county. He took an active part in the development of the county resources, was always interested in the promotion of his community at large. Over this period of years he was an important citizen, rendering service in whatsoever capacity he found himself obligated to serve. For approximately 53 years he was a member of the Brethren church, being a charter member of the church in Hamlin, always doing his part in its advance, growth. He was also an active member of the Masonic lodge, having been master in that fraternity several times. He served on the local school board for many years, was in touch with the educational promotions of his community. A number of times he was elected mayor of Hamlin, in which capacity he efficiently served. These activities will be missed with his departure. He leaves in bereavement, his companion, Henrietta, one son, Milton, a daughter, Beaula Schilling, both of Los Angeles, Calif., a daughter, Mrs. Bevins, of Hamlin, also 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, many other kin, a host of friends, neighbors, all united in this hour of grief. The funeral was conducted from the Brethren church in Hamlin, by Rev. L. A. Myers, of Morrill, the body laid to rest in the Hamlin cemetery. —The Hiawatha Daily World (Hiawatha, KS) Sat.
