Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 16, 2010 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Ceylon, Minnesota. Reverend Eugene Anderson will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Nassen-Detert American Legion Post 529 of Ceylon, Iowa. Ervin Fred Ommen was born September 10, 1925 in Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of John and Freda (Popken) Ommen. He attended country school in Plymouth County, Iowa and later Central High School in Le Mars, Iowa. He was drafted into the United States Navy. He served his country during WWII. He was honorably discharged. After his discharge, he attended Los Angeles City College for two years. He was united in marriage to Catherine "Kay" Feuerstein on November 19, 1950 in Watertown, South Dakota. They lived in Garden City, South Dakota Ervin worked for Howard Robb before moving back to Le Mars, Iowa in 1955. Ervin worked construction with John Brangwin for a few years before moving back to Garden City. They farmed in Garden City for 14 years. After retiring from farming, they moved to Dell Rapids, South Dakota in 1972. Ervin was a nursing home administrator for the Odd Fellows Nursing Home in Dell Rapids. He retired in 1985. In 1986, they moved to Akron, Iowa. Ervin worked part-time for Dirk's Hardware in Akron for many years. In 2004, they moved to Ceylon, Minnesota. Kay passed away June 27, 2007 in Ceylon, Minnesota. In November of 2007, he moved to a nursing home in Blue Earth, Minnesota and later to the Minnesota Veteran's Home in Luverne, Minnesota. Ervin was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Ceylon, Minnesota. He was lifetime member of the American Legion. He was a past Grand Master of the South Dakota Odd Fellows Lodge. Ervin enjoyed going hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed doing carpentry work and woodworking. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include a son: Steven Ommen (Debra) of Ceylon, MN; 3 grandchildren: Jason Ommen (Jenny) of Okoboji, IA and their children, Bryce and Brighton, Jennifer Swan (David) of Woodland Park, CO, and their daughter, Samantha, and Joy Pockrus (Dan) of Ceylon, MN and their children, Cassie, Adara, and Daniel; 2 brothers: Melvin Ommen (Jalane) of Henry, SD and Donald Ommen of Lewison, ID; a sister: Vera Pasawalk of Denver, CO; a step sister: Alice "Sis" Gillam of Salem, OR; 3 step brothers: Delbert Gillam of Post Falls, ID, George Gillam of Spokane, WA, and Bruce Gillam of Mitchell, SD; 7 brothers in law; 8 sisters in law; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kay Ommen; a sister: Bernice Henrich; a brother: Henry Ommen; 2 sisters in infancy; and his step father: Earl Gillam.
