ERVIN MANON SMITH Ervin M. Smith was born in Green Castle, Ind., December 16, 1827 of parents of revolutionary stock, being descended from the William Rose Smith, a Scotchman who came to America at the time of the "Boston Tea Party" insurrection and settled in Virginia, the family later emigrating to Indiana. The subject of this sketch came to Clarke County about the year 1849, being one of Osceola's earliest settlers. He lived the remainder of his life either in the town or on a farm near Prairie Grove. He taught the first school in the county, was for a number of years the mail carrier between Osceola and Chariton and later was Osceola's first druggist, his store being located where the city hall now stands. In 1850 he married Miss Miranda Collier of this county. The ceremony was performed in Chariton, the couple making the journey and return on horseback. For a number of years following, their home was what is now the Dr. Bolibaugh property. To this union were born eight children — one son and seven daughters — three of whom are living: Mrs. Lydia Mullen of Des Moines; .Mrs. Mary Root of Rock Island, Ill.; and Mrs. Flora Holden of this city. On Sunday evening, Aug. 18, 1913, he passed peacefully away at his home in Osceola, at the age of 85 years, 8 months, 2 days, following an illness of more than two years duration. The funeral services, largely attended took place Tuesday afternoon at his late home, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Carpenter of the Methodist Episcopal church and followed by interment in Maple Hill cemetery. The bereaved wife, the companion of more than half a century, children, grandchildren, great grand children, an unusually large relationship and circle of friends, revere the memory of a faithful, loving husband and father and kind, generous, helpful friend. "Erv" Smith, as he was familiarly known, possessed a happy, genial disposition, generous to a fault. Always fond of reading, up to the time of his last illness he kept posted on the topics of the day, taking a remarkable interest in public affairs for one of his advanced age. He was a member of the Methodist Protestant church. Out of town relatives present at the obsequies were Mrs. Root, Rock Island, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. John Mullen, Des Moines; Mrs. Lucile Buell and Leal Wilson, Omaha; Fred Mullen, Des Moines; Mr. Mrs. Mullen, New Virginia; Mrs. L.
