Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, NE. Pallbearers will be Erwin's grandsons, Jay Heimes, Grant Heimes, Ryan Koch, Kyle Heimes, Tyler Heimes, Jody Koch, Jesse Koch, Hunter Koch, Shawn Koch, Casey Koch, and John Lauer. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Wynot American Legion Post 31. Erwin Alexander Koch was born on September 12, 1921 in St. James, Nebraska to Alex and Helen (Soreson) Koch. He attended elementary school in Brooky Bottom and then graduated from Wynot High School. After graduation, Erwin enlisted in the U.S. Marines and was stationed in California during World War II. After his honorable discharge from the Marines, Erwin returned home and met his future bride Mildred Dorothy Promes at Homewood Park in the Wynot area. He and Mildred were married on June 3, 1947 in St. James, NE. They resided in the St. James/Brooky Bottom area where he continued to farm and raise seven children. In 1964 Erwin and his family moved from the farm into Wynot and owned and operated the Wynot Tavern for 20 years. Along with operating the Tavern he also drove the school bus for 30+ years. Erwin served on the Wynot Volunteer Fire Department, was an EMT, served as the Wynot Mayor and was the Cedar County Veterans Service Officer for many years. Erwin was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, the Wynot American Legion Post 31. He took care of the church grounds outside and inside for many years. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and having an occasional "Stump Blower". Erwin is survived by his seven children and their spouses, Sharon and Alton Heimes of Hartington, Roger and Rosalie Koch of Hartington, Kathy and Paul Young of Hartington, Randy and Mary Koch of Hartington, Carmen and Ron Lauer of Hartington, Mike and Julie Koch of Yankton, SD, Aaron and fiancé Tina Promes of West Point, NE; 24 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren on the way; one sister Irene Peitz of California; four sisters-in-law Mavis Koch of Wynot, Phyllis Koch of Wynot, Marie Koch of Hartington, Rita Koch of Hartington; brother-in-law Bill LeClair of Sioux City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mildred on November 6, 2011 at the age of 87; infant son; son-in-law David Heimes; grandson Jack Lauer; six brothers Herman, Bob, Cyril, Donald, Tony, and Ray Koch; two sisters Sr. Virgil Koch and Delores LeClair.
