Read More	Erwin Winkelman, 83, of 919 2nd Street N.W., Waverly, Iowa, died Monday morning, May 26, 2003, at the Shell Rock Health Care Center, Shell Rock, Iowa, from complication of cancer. Erwin was born on July 17, 1919, in Lafayette Township in Bremer County near Plainfield, Iowa, the son of William L. and Meta (Ringleb) Winkelman. He was baptized on August 3, 1919, at the United Church of Christ - Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville, and was confirmed on August 5, 1934, at Evangelical Immanuel Church near Clarksville. He attended country school near his home and following his schooling worked for Vern and Wilbur Shield at the lime quarry. He then entered the U.S. Army during WWII on January 1, 1942. Following his discharge on October 31, 1945, Erwin returned to Waverly and continued to work at the Shield lime quarry.On December 1, 1946, he was united in marriage to Virginia Mummelthie at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. The couple made their home in Waverly and in the early 1960's, Erwin worked at the Self-Help Company, where he helped Vern Shield build one of the first tractors for overseas. In 1968, he went to work at Schield Bantam, retiring in 1983. Following his retirement, Erwin worked part-time at the Waverly Tractor Company. Erwin was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. He was also a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post # 2208. Erwin enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends. Erwin is survived by his wife, Virginia of Waverly, Iowa; a daughter, Patti Winkelman of Clarksville, Iowa; one son, Mike Winkelman and his wife, Penny of New Hartford, Iowa; 2 grandchildren, David and Matthew Winkelman; and two brothers, Lorenz Winkelman and his wife, Dorlena of Waverly, and Edward Winkelman and his wife, Phyllis of Clear Lake, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Loyd Winkelman; and three sisters, Mable, Mildred and Lois in infancy. Celebration of Life services will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly, with Pastor Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will be in the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Waverly Amvets Post #79. Memorials may be directed to the family.
