Read More	********************************************************** The city of Culbertson and the surrounding community received its second shock of the week Tuesday morning when it learned of the death of Esrom Rothermel, 71, who was found dead in his chair at the Rothermel home here at about ten o'clock by Mrs. Rothermel as she returned from from a short shopping trip up town. Death was due to heart trouble and was instantaneous. Funeral services were held at the home at 1 o'clock this afternoon and the body taken to the Zion Hill church where the second service was held, Rev. M.S. Satchell conducting. Burial was made in Zion Hill cemetery. W.D. Otis of Trenton had charge of arrangements. In the death of Mr. Rothermel the community loses one of its early settlers, Mr. Rothermel coming to southwest Nebraska in 1883, when he located in Furnas county, moving to Culbertson shortly after. He was 71 years, 8 months, and 21 days old at the time of death. For the past year Mr. Rothermel has been suffering from heart attacks and the past few weeks his conditions became so serious that it was practically impossible for him to exert himself to the extent of coming up town. While his condition was considered serious his death came as a shock. He is survived by his widow. Source: The Culbertson Progress, November 16, 1933 ******************** Esrom Rothermel was born in Northumberland county, Pennsylvania on February 24, 1862 of Pennsylvania Dutch parents, whose ancestors were among the early settlers of the state. He was one of a family of 13 children, two of whom survive. At the age of ten years Mr. Rothermel ran a butcher wagon over the mountains of the coal regions of eastern Pennsylvania at the time when the notorious Mollie McGuire gang of cut-throats terrorized that section. He came west in 1883 and settled in Furnas county and the following year filed on a government claim in the northeast corner of Hitchcock county. A year later he settled on this land and has lived on this quarter section and three additional quarters that he added to his original investment for more than thirty years. He spent five years on the Pacific coast and in 1907 was married to Sarah Hodgkins of San Francisco, California, who survives him. Mr. and Mrs. Rothermel moved to Culbertson in 1918 at the close of the World war and has since made their home here. During his residence on the Pacific coast he made a trip to Alaska where he met with some thrilling experiences. "Ed" Rothermel, as he was familiarly known, was a man of sterling character, a true and loving husband, a kind and obliging friend and neighbor. He was a man of strong convictions and loyal to any cause he espoused. This community has suffered an irretrievable loss in the passing of Ed Rothermel.
