Description	:	Brewster Herald - Jan. 18, 1924 Died last Saturday at the Deaconess hospital at Wenatchee, Mrs. Esther A. Gillespie, at the age of 64 years. Mrs. Esther A. Gillespie was born in Illinois in 1860 when two years old moved to Kansas with her parents and located on a homestead in the northeastern portion of the state. She was married to A. C. Gillespie in 1878 to which union were born two boys, Albert Clarence and William L. Read More	Brewster Herald - Jan. 18, 1924 Died last Saturday at the Deaconess hospital at Wenatchee, Mrs. Esther A. Gillespie, at the age of 64 years. Mrs. Esther A. Gillespie was born in Illinois in 1860 when two years old moved to Kansas with her parents and located on a homestead in the northeastern portion of the state. She was married to A. C. Gillespie in 1878 to which union were born two boys, Albert Clarence and William L. In the year 1884 with her husband and family they moved to Washington then a territory and located on a homestead a short distance north and east of the present town of Waterville. Here was felt the real hardships of pioneer life. All supplies had to be hauled in from either Spokane or Ellensburg which required better than a week's time to get in the goods and as a consequence a lot of the luxuries of life had to be dispensed with. At that time there were but few white women in the entire county of Douglas and they were long distances apart. However not daunted Mrs. Gillespie made the best of the situation was a great help to her husband in the improving of the raw land of their farm. The first few years were very lean years for the stubborn soil refused to produce enough crops to get the seed back. She was often months at a time without the social pleasure of visiting with her kind. In the year 1901 they sold their farm moving to Brewster where they bought the general merchandise store established 3 years before by D. L. Gillespie and resided here until the time of her death. She was a kind and affectionate wife a loving mother, a kindly neighbor and always the first to respond to the call of distress. To know her was to love her for many kindly and lovable traits of character. She leaves to w sons and mother who resides here and three brothers in the east and one sister who resides in Waterville. Funeral services were held at Waterville and she was placed along side of her husband who had passed away three years before, in the Mausoleum at Waterville, Tuesday morning at ten o'clock.
