In Spirit Lake township, June 3rd, of Apoplexy, Esther Ann Kingman, aged 59 years, wife of Alvarado Kingman. This community has seldom been shocked as it was by this announcement. While Mrs. Kingman had twice in the past few months been critically ill, she has recently seemed in usual health. The real nature of her previous attacks were not understood at the time. Tuesday evening she was apparently well, and retired in excellent spirits. About 11 o'clock she became a little restless, and shortly told Mr. Kingman she thought another bad spell was coming on. The husband went into another room for Restorative and meanwhile the wife arose and attempted to robe herself. Returning, Mr. Kingman was asked for water, but when he brought it, life had fled. Deceased had lived in Dickinson county longer than any other woman. The family came here in 1858, and shortly made and all the time subsequently occupied a home on the shore of Spirit Lake. Mrs. Kingman acted well for her part through all the trying pioneer period. Then as ever she was a rare gift in the home. She bravely took up her work along the line of duty and without complaint or faltering served as only the strongest and most loyal type of womanhood can serve those with whom her lot was cast. All through the years following the day she stood at the marriage alter she was a constant companion, safe counselor and loyal helpmate. One of the most industrious of her family. She shrank not from trials and yielded not to difficulties. As we think of her inestimable worth as a wife, we marvel not at the overwhelming grief of the husband to whom she was more than life itself. He has in his children much to live for. but the sun of his life has set forever. And what a mother she was. Could anything further have been required or performed in the line of strong, tender, thoughtful, helpful, motherhood than was rendered by this dear, dead mother. All mothers, we believe, are by instinct and inclination kind and faithful to the little ones. This mother's love waned not at any stage in the career of her children. They were her very own in womanhood, in middle life, as they were in infancy, and she was never happier then when smoothing the pathway of her children who long since left the fondling shade of the family roof tree. Weather the world goes well or ill with tem these gently daughters will never suppress the yearnings of the heart for this lost queen of the home. In thirty-two years, Mrs. Kingman probably crossed our county lines less than a dozen times. That quaint phrase "a home body" could be fittingly applied to her. People said she made a slave of herself in serving her family. Not so. Herein she found delights more sweet than were ever afforded in all the broad range of Vanity Fair. She knew the wealth of a well ordered home, and recognized the worth of enduring family ties. A visit to the Kingman home was a pleasure and an inspiration. The light of that home has gone out and loved ones sit in the blackness and darkness. Four children were born to this union, one of whom died in infancy. Mrs. L. H. Farnham, Mrs. A. F. Bergman and Miss Abbie Kingman survive as a solace to the stricken husband in his declining years. Mr. and Mrs. Farnham only last week started for the Pacific Coast and are beyond call. The older settlers feel almost a personal bereavement in this death, for Mrs. Kingman was one of the few surviving woman pioneers. and her home was a popular resort for these old-time friends.
