Phillis was born in Columbus, Pa. August 10, 1817, died in Northwood, Iowa April 5, 1895. Those dates record the beginning of a splendid earthly life and the beginning of the never ending heavenly life. In September 1839, she was married to Hugh Sweney. In 1855, with their family of young children, they made the long journey west, down the Ohio and up the Mississippi, settling at last upon a prairie farm east of Osage. Here for 15 years they lived and toiled, undergoing many of the privations of frontier and pioneer life. Early in 1862 their two eldest boys, one a mere lad, went with a patriot mother's blessing and ever followed by her prayers to the services of this country; and later when the older son was most grievously wounded, Mother Sweney spent four months at Jefferson barracks, Mo. nursing him back to life. In 1870 their children being well equipped for and bravely engaged in the battle of life, the father and mother moved to Osage. There on May 3, 1884 Mother Sweney's companion passed over to the better country, since which time she lived mainly with and for her children. In character she was pure gold, her most prominent traits being truth, loyalty and staunch devotion to God and her children. We doubt if anyone living can remember a time when she did not seem to be a devoted Christian. This sentiment was tenderly shown at the beautifully simple and appropriate ceremonies here, and later by the crowds of sorrowing friends who listened to the sincere and manly tributes of loving pastors, at the music and flower crowned services at Osage. Mother Sweney's bereaved ones can ask of heaven no richer heritage than a double portion of her noble spirit may rest and abide on them. From FAG Contributor: L Winslow
