She graduated from Platte High School in 1934, worked for the Aurora County Agent for a year, and completed a program at a business college in Mitchell, SD. Esther Bernice (Knutson) Buttrey was born on July 30, 1916 to Oscar and Ethel (Munger) Knutson in Brule County, SD. She graduated from Platte High School in 1934, worked for the Aurora County Agent for a year, and completed a program at a business college in Mitchell, SD. In 1939 she finished her teaching degree from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell. Esther earned a Master’s Degree in Education in1955. On July 25, 1961 she was united in marriage to Benton Wilson Buttrey. Esther enjoyed a 40 year career in education, teaching at various locations: Bradley and Alcester, SD; Sibley, IA; the Mitchell High School Business Department; the University of South Dakota School of Business in Vermillion; and Ames High School in Iowa. Esther loved to play the piano and had a fondness for flowers. Grateful for having shared in Esther’s life: her brother, Dwight Knutson and wife, Clara of Platte, SD; along with five nieces and nephews: Bernice Gifford, Arlan Knutson, Craig Knutson, Kimberly Van Zee and Loren Knutson. Esther was preceded in death by: her husband, Ben (Dec. 30, 2007); her parents, Oscar and Ethel Knutson; and a brother, Howard (Deva) Knutson.
