Description	:	Esther Catherine Van Houweling was born on April 13, 1919, on a farm in Black Oak Township near Leighton, Iowa. Her parents were Gerrit and Kate Van Zante Van Houweling. Esther's mother, Kate, died very soon at Esther's birth and when Esther was nine months of age her father, Gerrit, passed away during the influenza epidemic. Her parents were Gerrit and Kate Van Zante Van Houweling. Esther's mother, Kate, died very soon at Esther's birth and when Esther was nine months of age her father, Gerrit, passed away during the influenza epidemic. As very young children, Esther and her older brother, Carl Van Houweling, went to live with and were raised by their Uncle and Aunt, Matthew and Carrie Van Houweling Huyser. Matthew and Carrie had only one child, Francis C. Huyser, and they grew up more like sister and brothers, rather than cousins. Esther received an 8th grade education at a rural country grade school. During World War II she was engaged to marry Geurt Snetselaar and during the war he was inducted into the Armed Services and was killed in action. His death along with the untimely death of her parents had a lasting impact on Esther's life. She coped with their deaths but never ever forgot them. Esther became a resident of Pella, Iowa and at an early age began working at Jaarsma Bakery on the East side of the square. She then began working at the Ben Franklin Store. Esther was an employee and had a presence there for many, many years until her retirement. Horses and dogs were a special part of her life as she grew up and in later years she enjoyed traveling with family and friends. On Thursday morning, May 13, 2010, Esther passed away at Hearthstone (Jefferson Place) in Pella at the age of 91 years. She is survived by three nieces and a nephew and their spouses: Dorothy and Bob Cage of Calhoun, Louisiana, Carolyn and Tom Bollman of Washington, Iowa, Myron and Susan Van Houweling of Prairie City, Iowa, Linda and Jerry Vande Kieft of Wilton, Iowa; and many cousins. Esther was preceded in death by her parents, Gerrit and Kate Van Houweling; and the parents who raised her, Uncle Matthew and Aunt Carrie Huyser; her brother, Carl A. Van Houweling and his wife, Marie (Brand); and her special cousin, Francis Huyser and his wife, Jeannette (Dekker). Esther was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church of Pella, Iowa.
