Description	:	Esther Cecilia Chaplin Hess, a beautiful and spirit filled women who brought kindness and happiness to every place she entered, left us to be with her Savior, our Lord, on October 7, 2015, at the Life Care Center in Burlington. Esther was born on July 30, 1917, in Medford, Oklahoma, to Henry and Anna Knobloch Kretchmar. She was the youngest of a family of eight children. Read More	Esther Cecilia Chaplin Hess, a beautiful and spirit filled women who brought kindness and happiness to every place she entered, left us to be with her Savior, our Lord, on October 7, 2015, at the Life Care Center in Burlington. Esther was born on July 30, 1917, in Medford, Oklahoma, to Henry and Anna Knobloch Kretchmar. She was the youngest of a family of eight children. Esther's parents were farmers and were part of the Oklahoma Land Rush in 1889. Esther really enjoyed her childhood and loved her family by recounting many wonderful stories of life on the Oklahoma farm to her children and grandchildren. She graduated from Medford High School. On June 11, 1940, she married Veryl Chaplin. To this union they were blessed with a son, Donald Chaplin. A few years later, the family was in an auto accident where Veryl was killed. As with the tough times of which Esther was experienced, she moved with Donnie to Wichita where she got a job at Boeing Aircraft as a plane inspector, and was part of Rosie the Riveters gang in the WWII era. While at Boeing she met Laurence Hess. They fell in love and were married on October 7, 1944. After the war, they made their home on the family farm SW of Waverly. They raised turkeys, chickens, sheep, hogs, and grain crops, as well as hay. From this union they were blessed with seven children. Esther knew how to work hard and the value of a dollar. She and Laurence knew the importance of a good education and made sure their children had educational opportunities. Laurence and Esther spent many wonderful years together through lean times and the good times. Their love was never failing and their children meant the world to them. Laurence passed away September 17, 1995. Esther was known for her many talents of sewing, baking, preserving, gardening, cooking, and in the later years for her painting. She was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the Altar Society, and the Prairie View E.H.U. She had many friends whom she cherished. Esther was a devoted Catholic and her faith was always never failing. She loved her grandchildren and spent many wonderful and fun times with them. She was always available to talk to them and pray for them with rosary in hand. Her last few years were spent at the Life Care Center in Burlington, where given her wonderful spirit she would brighten her caregivers and co-patients days. She kept painting at the nursing home and was blessed to have made many colorful paintings. She loved her nurses and caregivers who took care of her. Esther was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her 5 brothers, Robert, Bernard, Harold, Henry Jr., and Eugene Kretchmar and 2 sisters, Rosella Lewis and Sister Margaret Kretchmar. Esther is survived by her 4 sons, Donald Chaplin, Piedmont, Larry Hess and his wife Sallee, Waverly, Dale Hess and his wife Barbara, Jonesboro, Georgia, G. Wayne Hess, Waverly, her 4 daughters, Sherlyn Graham, Wichita, Marilyn Eccles, and her husband Gene, Waverly, Norma Stager and her husband Dale, Wichita, and Joyce Krueger and her husband Dwight, Lebo, 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 12, 2015, 10:00 A.M., at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Burlington. There will be a Rosary recited at 4:00 P.M. on Sunday with visitation following 4:30 P.M. until 5:30 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Glendale Cemetery, northeast of Burlington. Contributions may be made to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church or the American Diabetes Association, and sent in care of Jones Funeral Home, P.O. Box 277, Burlington, KS 66839.
