Description	:	Esther E. Begalka, the daughter of Deidrich H. and Emma (Balgren) Schmidt was born July 11, 1923, on a farm northeast of White, SD. She attended rural school and graduated from White, SD high school. She attended and graduated from Eastern State Normal School at Madison, SD. She taught at various schools in the Estelline, SD area for seven years. She also clerked at several stores, in Estelline, for a few summers. Begalka, the daughter of Deidrich H. and Emma (Balgren) Schmidt was born July 11, 1923, on a farm northeast of White, SD. She attended rural school and graduated from White, SD high school. She attended and graduated from Eastern State Normal School at Madison, SD. She taught at various schools in the Estelline, SD area for seven years. She also clerked at several stores, in Estelline, for a few summers. She married Maynard Begalka of Estelline on August 20, 1944 and resided on the farm for 49 years. They had one daughter, Cleo. After her husband’s death on June 4, 1992, she and her daughter moved to Clear Lake, SD. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and was active in the Ladies WELCA and Circles, where she held various offices through the years. Besides being a housewife, she worked at Raven Industries, in Clear Lake, for several years. Her hobbies included gardening, flowers, canning, sewing, cooking, visiting with friends and day tripping. She became a resident at Good Samaritan Center in Clear Lake, SD in February 2016 where she like to play bingo. Ester passed away on Monday, October 31, 2016 at the Deuel County Good Samaritan Center in Clear Lake at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 20 days. Survivors include one daughter, Cleo Begalka, Clear Lake, SD; two sisters: Emalyn (Reuben) Fritzler, Cape Girardeau, MO and Marian Kruse, Rapid City, SD; one brother, Bill (Harriet) Schmidt, Rapid City, SD; one sister-in-law, Bernice Begalka, Bellingham, WA and many nieces, nephews and many friends. Esther is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Maynard; sisters: Cora Heppler, Helen Miller, Dorothy Fellow and Gladys Hutt; and one brother, Elmer Schmidt. - Houseman-Birk Funeral Home
