Description	:	Esther Elva Waltner was born to Peter P. and Emma (Kaufman) Wedel on May 25, 1923 in Moundridge, Kan. She died of the effects of a stroke on Sept. 20, 2010 at Oakview Terrace in Freeman, S.D. She was baptized by Rev. Peter P. Wedel (her father) on May 26, 1940 and became a member of First Mennonite Church of Christian, Moundridge. Esther attended Moundridge High School followed by one year at Bethel College. Read More	Esther Elva Waltner was born to Peter P. and Emma (Kaufman) Wedel on May 25, 1923 in Moundridge, Kan. She died of the effects of a stroke on Sept. 20, 2010 at Oakview Terrace in Freeman, S.D. She was baptized by Rev. Peter P. Wedel (her father) on May 26, 1940 and became a member of First Mennonite Church of Christian, Moundridge. Esther attended Moundridge High School followed by one year at Bethel College. She then took three years of nurses training at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton, Kan., and graduated as a registered nurse. As a nurse, she worked one year in Hutchinson, Kan. She entered voluntary service with her sister and continued her work in Gulfport, Miss. There she met Carroll Waltner who was serving in CPS. Carroll and Esther were married on June 8, 1948 in Moundridge and they shared 52 years of life together. They farmed northwest of Hurley, S.D., where they lived for 49 years. Esther especially enjoyed gardening, sewing and baking. She transferred church membership to Salem Mennonite Church. As a church member she enjoyed teaching Sunday school and participating in Women's Mission Society. Carroll and Esther moved to Walnut Street Village in Freeman in 1997 where Esther enjoyed 11 years of retirement. The last two years of her life were spent at Oakview Terrace. During her retirement she continued to enjoy reading, cooking and old and new friendships. Esther is survived by her daughter Jorgiann and husband George Glubka, Minneapolis, Minn.; two sisters: Laura Mae Voran and husband Willis, New Holland, Pa., and DeLores Sawatzky and husband Gordon, Greeley, Colo.; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her two brothers: Richard and Silas; and three sisters: Erma Vogt, Wilma Stucky and MaryAnn Lawler. The funeral was held Thursday, Sept. 23 at 11 a.m. at Salem Mennonite Church with Pastor Stacey Waltner officiating and Murray Ries as organist. A tribute to Esther was read by S. Roy Kaufman and Kaye Waltner provided vocal music. Pallbearers were John D. Waltner, Steve C. Waltner, Terry Waltner and Tony Waltner. Interment was at Salem Mennonite Church Cemetery.
