Esther was born Sept. 5, 1913, near Lawton, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Emma (Braesh) Funck. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in October of 1913. She moved with her family to Minnesota. Esther graduated from Arco High School in Minnesota in June of 1932. She moved back to Iowa after graduation and took care of her parents on the farm. Esther married Frank A. Krom on Sept. 5, 1940. She was employed at the Palmer House Motel for 27 years. Frank died in 1971. Esther was a woman of very strong faith. She had been a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the ladies circle, later transferring to Redeemer Lutheran Church and attended church with her children. She was an avid listener of the Lutheran Hour and the Good Shepherd Hour. Esther loved her flowers and feeding the birds no matter what the weather. In the winter she always went out to make sure they had food. Esther made her own bread until she could not knead the dough any more. She always had fresh cookies on hand; peanut butter was her favorite. She was a perfectionist who loved sewing and made afghans until her fingers would not work for her any more. She lived in her own home until a year and a half ago, when she became a resident of Countryside. Survivors include a son and his wife, David and Arlene Krom of Sioux City; two grandsons, Mike Krom and his fiancee, Lisa Welte of Sioux City and Aaron Krom of Spearfish, S.D.; two great-granddaughters, Kayla Krom and Kelsey Krom of Sioux City; special friends, Harlan and Mary Feddersen of Sioux City; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Emma Funck; her husband, Frank; and her brothers and sisters.
