HENDRYX Esther Irene (Balsiger) Hendryx died Sunday, July 19, at her Strawberry Mountain home in White Salmon at the age of 85. She was born March 30, 1902 to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Balsiger in Ione, Ore. The family moved to White Salmon when she was one year old to reside on Strawberry Mountain. She graduated from Columbia Union High School in 1922, and after graduation took a course in dress-making at the Oregon State Extension School in Portland. She operated a dress-making shop in White Salmon for several years before her marriage to the late James (Jim) T. Hendryx on Nov. 20, 1930. The first 10 years of their marriage they lived in Husum. At the passing of Esther's mother, they moved to Strawberry Mountain to care for her father. She made Strawberry Mountain her home for 74 years. Before the passing of Jimin1981, Esther and Jim Hendryx were able to celebrate their fiftieth (golden) wedding anniversary in November 1980 at a party given by their daughter. Mrs. Hendryx was a member of Bethel Congregational Church of White Salmon for 72 years, serving as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, member of the choir and as president of the Ladies Guild for 10 years. She was also a member of Mountain View Grange for 55 years and active in the Grange Auxiliary. She won the Mother of the Year award in 1971. She also was the local news correspondent for the White Salmon Enterprise newspaper for many years. Mrs. Hendryx is survived by her two daughter, Erdine Holter of Portland, Ore., and Charlotte Hale of White Salmon; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Services for Mrs. Hendryx will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Bethel Congregational Church, with the Rev. Arthur Dickey officiating. Interment will follow in the White Salmon Cemetery under the direction of Gardner Funeral Home, White Salmon.
