D., Wednesday of last week, after a long illness. The remains were brought to this place, accompanied by her son and his wife, arriving Monday. Pillen Remains brought here for interment. Mrs. J. J. Pillen died at the home of her son W. E. Berkeley, near Ashton, S. D., Wednesday of last week, after a long illness. The remains were brought to this place, accompanied by her son and his wife, arriving Monday. Tuesday at 10:30 funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Alice Pogue, conducted by Rev. C. F. Dame of the Baptist Church, after which the remains were taken to the chapel cemetery and placed by the side of her first husband. In addition to Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Berkey of Ashton, S. D., There were present John Berkey, a son of deceased and Mrs. Arthur Hussey, a sister and only surviving member of the Gish family, both of the last named residing in Lafayette. Esther Jane Gish was born in Lafayette Sept. 10, 1840. Some fifteen years later she removed with her parents to a farm near Monon chapel. She remained in that vicinity until 1897. After that time she resided in Frankfort and other places until about two years ago she went to live with her son in South Dakota. She was married to Thomas W. Berkey, April 28, 1858 into this union were born two sons and one daughter, Wm. E., John and Rebecca. Mr. Berkey died Nov. 27, 1877 and on June 3, 1909 Mrs. Burkey was married to J. J. Pillen. In early life she united with the Methodist Church and remained a member until about two years ago when, as there was no Methodist Church near her home, she united with a Congregational Church. It was her desire that the funeral services be held near her old home and among the friends of her early years, and accordingly she was taken to the place which was found to be accessible to the largest number of those associates of her early life. - Monon News Jan 1, 1915
