Duncan a resident of Wayne County Nearly Forty Years Died Saturday June 10 On last Saturday morning, June 10, at 7:15 occurred the death of Esther M. Duncan, familiarly called Aunt Esther, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Clow. She had been sick about a week. Monday she rode from town to the Clow home and walked around considerably, she was up some each day until Friday then, weakened very fast. She was patient and uttered no complaint during her illness. Friday afternoon it was evident that she was sinking very rapidly and before 6 o’clock she went to sleep like a tired child from which she never awakened on earth, passing away the next morning without a struggle. She lived a long life and possessed great strength and activity for one so old. She was able to walk out and see her neighbors and friends until just about a week before she died. Esther Melvina, daughter of Keziah and John Johnston was born in Tennessee, July 20, 1823. She resided in Blount County, Tennessee with her parents until 18 years of age when she was united in marriage to Madison Edwards, March 15, 1841. To this union was born one son, John. Her husband died July 19, 1842 and she remained in Tennessee until 1849 when, with her seven year old son, she moved to Louisa County, Iowa. She was married to Archibald W. Duncan Dec. 15, 1856. To this union were born six children, five of whom are living, one son dying in infancy. The children are A.M., A. G. Duncan, Mrs. Bell Clow of this place; Mrs. Effie Myers, Cincinnati, Iowa; Mrs. Jane Streby, Wichita, Kan. and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ella Edwards, Columbus Junc., Iowa. All were present for the funeral. She has thirty-five grandchildren, of whom twenty-nine are living, eighteen great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Since a small child she has been an earnest devoted Christian, being at the time of her death a member of the United Presbyterian Church at Allerton. She was a most faithful attendant unless sickness prevented. Her Bible was her daily companion. She died, June 10, 1911, at the ripe age of 87 years, 10 months, and 20 days, being the last of a family of 5 sisters and 2 brothers. Besides her family she leaves a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and many friends to mourn her departure. The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. E.H. Black, assisted by Rev. L.E. Ripley of the Methodist Church at the residence of Geo. Clow, Sabbath afternoon at 3 o’clock, six granddaughters Lena Caldwell, Gerty Adamson, Myrtle Miller, Golda Snodgrass, Iva and Olive Duncan acted as pallbearers. The remains were tenderly conveyed to the Allerton Cemetery and placed in their last resting place beside her husband.
