Graveside services will be held 1:30 P.M. at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Battle Creek. Reverend Duane Fahr will officiate. Esther died Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at Good Samaritan Society in Bloomfield, Nebraska. Esther Rebecca (Orness) Hoffman was born on January 24, 1921, to John L. and Gena Mathilda (Carlson) Orness at their farm home near LaMoure, ND. She was a preemie and was baptized by her father emergently as she was born with a large open area on her back and the attending doctor did not think that she could survive. Her father wrapped her in cotton swaddling, placed her in a shoe box and put her in the warming oven to keep her warm so that she might survive. She was later baptized at the Rogate Lutheran Church in Berlin, ND on May 21, 1921, when she could be taken to church safely. Esther was confirmed at Rogate Lutheran Church on June 16, 1935, her Bible verse was Jeremiah 31:3, "I have loved thee with an everlasting love; therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee." Esther graduated from Berlin, ND High School in May 1939 as Valedictorian of her class. She then attended and graduated from Valley City Teacher's College. On August 17, 1941, she and Warren Hoffman were married at Rogate Lutheran Church. To this union four sons and one daughter were born. In November 1944, the family moved to Meadow Grove, NE where they farmed. In 1947, they purchased a farm northwest of Bloomfield and moved to this community. Over the next several years Esther took college courses from Wayne State College and in Vermillion, SD and received her bachelor's degree. She then taught for nine and one half years at First Trinity School with one year as principal. In the late 60's Esther moved on to a new venture in her life and began working at Dale Electronics in Yankton, SD for approximately one year. She then made the career move to working as a ward clerk at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD for the next twenty years. She retired from this in 1988 when she and Warren decided that the Nebraska winters were getting too cold for them. They wanted to spend part of the winter months in Arizona near Esther's sister, Martha and brother-in-law Clarence. They purchased a travel trailer and began this new leg of their journey into part-time retirement. They continued to farm with son, Rich and his wife Trudy, north of Bloomfield until 1996 when they moved into Bloomfield. In the fall of 2005, Warren and Esther moved to Mainview Apartments due to Warren's failing health. On December 1, 2005, Warren went to his heavenly home. Esther continued to live at the apartments until July 2006 when she moved to the Sunset View Assisted Living in Bloomfield. She made many friends there and entertained everyone with her musical talents of playing the organ and piano. In March of 2009, due to declining health, Esther moved to the Bloomfield Good Samaritan Nursing Home and was blessed to have Evelyn Koops as a roommate. The ladies enjoyed many hours of visiting and watching TV. Esther was a member of First Trinity Lutheran Church and their Ladies Aid Group. She was a long-time member of the Northview Extension Club. She taught Vacation Bible School and was a member of the church choir for many years. God blessed Esther with the ability to play music by ear in addition to being able to read music. She played for church and many other groups throughout the years continuing into her time at the Good Samaritan Home. In 1987, Esther formed the Esther Hoffman Singers where they entertained monthly at the Good Samaritan Home and for many other events. The group continues today and up until the past year Esther would still direct them. Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Warren; her daughter, Margaret; parents; four brothers; and five sisters. She is survived by her four sons and their wives, Don and Helen of Sutton, NE, Richard and Trudy of Bloomfield, NE, Bob and Kay of Norfolk, NE, and Mike and Debbie of Bloomfield, NE; ten grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; along with a host of nieces and nephews.
